Porn industry girds for Trump crackdown on filth
Washington Examiner ^ | Dec. 13, 2018

Pornographers are bracing for the first major obscenity clampdown in three decades under President Trump’s new pick for attorney general, William Barr, a strident social conservative whose views threaten the lucrative industry.

Anti-porn campaigners were thrilled with Trump's selection of Barr, previously attorney general under President George H.W. Bush, noting his enthusiastic obscenity prosecutions in the early ‘90s.

Pornographers are taking the threat seriously, but argue a crackdown would be hypocritical under the thrice-married Trump. His links to the industry include softcore Playboy cameos, an alleged affair with Playmate of the Year Karen McDougal, an alleged tryst with hardcore star Stormy Daniels and an accusation of assault by adult actress Jessica Drake.

OK, get rid of Barr. He’s a threat to the porn vendors.

Keep Matthew Whitaker.

Great. Sessions hated pot. And Barr hates porn. I would love to read an article that Hillary Clinton was worried, or the Bob Mueller faced arrest.

Gangs rule Chicago and Baltimore - MS13 its rampant- cartels operate everywhere - banks launder dope money - Chinese spies are at every university -but yeah Bob, go after the porn. Morons

Isn’t filth protected by our First Amendment?

Our country is being overrun by Central American and Mexican gang members and other riffraff, and what does Barr think is the biggest threat to our national security? Some guy looking at dirty pictures, that's what.

Barr is going to be a big step down from Sessions, who at least cared about border security. Barr was GHW Bush's AG, and as an establishment Republican, doesn't give a damn about law enforcement issues that actually matter. The best way to distract attention from that is to focus on empty, symbolic non-issues like porn instead.

Were you expecting any better from a George H.W. Bush retread? He'll be such a disaster that you're going to miss Sessions, who at least acknowledged that illegal immigration was a problem and tried to do something about it. With this guy, we won't even get that.

Why does Trump keep surrounding himself with the very types of people who will make it impossible for him to implement any part of the agenda that he ran on? You can't drain the swamp while surrounding yourself with water moccasins.

It’s a pity because experts say that vinyl is far superior to digital pornographs

I am not sure how being married three times equates to pornography. They are two completely separate things.

Yes, although not completely. The Supreme Court adopted a test in the 1970's that makes it extremely difficult, but not impossible, to prosecute for obscenity. There have been a handful of successful prosecutions since, almost all of people who crossed the invisible lines observed by the industry.

Reagan appointed the Meese Commission to try to figure out how to regulate if not prohibit the stuff, but ultimately concluded it wasn't possible under SCOTUS' First Amendment case law.

Pretty much, or at least that's how the SCOTUS has repeatedly ruled.

For me, this isn't a Constitutional issue as much as it is about law enforcement priorities. You'd think that law enforcement would have more important things to worry about than some loser pleasuring himself as he watches two strangers have sex on a TV or computer screen, but evidently that isn't so. It's the same reason that I think busting people for smoking weed is a big waste of law enforcement resources.

isn’t under 18 considered child porn?
Go to any of those sites and type in “Traci Lords” and see what comes up.

Your house is burning down, right when you are writing to thank your aunt for knitting you an unattractive holiday sweater. But the fire can wait until you have finished your unexpurgated multipage letter so you can get it in tomorrow’s post, right?

Multitasking can solve that problem, too.

Seriously, in the USG, we have what amounts to organized crime mafias, domestic and foreign, who have infiltrated and are actively involved in tearing our country apart. Eliminating these infections is far more important that pursuing perpetual petty pursuits. In fact, there are only a minimal number of federal criminal justice pursuits more important.

Only when the government is purified of these scoundrels and they are spending many years in federal penitentiaries do we have *any* latitude to engage in business as usual.

None of your examples is equivalent to pornography, because people don’t often die from writing letters or knitting sweaters.

See post 15.

Unless they insist on writing letters and knitting sweaters while their home is on fire.

Conservatives have been way too patient with Republican Attorney Generals who should have indicted by now hundreds of prominent Democrats for blatant criminal acts, but instead wasted their time and effort on fights long ago decided and now just needing minor maintenance, if that.

Do you care that the FBI has been horribly corrupted and politicized?

Do you care that the IRS has been used to target conservative organizations by corrupt, political criminals?

Do you care that the US election system has been systematically perverted, turning conservative wins into losses with blatant criminal acts, like thousands more votes cast than there are registered voters?

Do you care that international criminal organizations like MS-13 and the Triad are running amok?

I care about a lot of things.

I am not incompetent enough to fall for specious rhetorical constructs attempting to insist that addressing one problem requires neglecting another. If presenting your so called point requires that sort of weaving and dodging stick to arguing with the young and the foolish.

I will also point out that the swamp has always been deeply involved with the sex trade, and it presents a point of vulnerability through which to go after them.
