ederal employees received pay stubs with nothing but zeros on them Friday as the effects of the government shutdown hit home, deepening anxieties about mortgage payments and unpaid bills.
All told, an estimated 800,000 government workers missed their paychecks for the first time since the shutdown began.
Employees posted pictures of the pay statements on Twitter and vented their frustration as the standoff over President Donald Trump's demand for $5.7 billion for a border wall entered its 21st day. This weekend, it will become the longest shutdown in U.S. history.
"I saw the zeros in my pay stub today, and it's a combination of reality setting in and just sadness," air traffic controller Josh Maria told The Associated Press after tweeting a screenshot of his paystub. "We're America. We can do better than this."

They ALL knew this was coming..........and warned to prepare for.
I recall after I lost my husband selling my furniture etc. in the front yard to survive until matters were settled. You do what ya gotta do!
I heard some are having group garage sales.
I don’t have any empathy for these folks......we’ve all had ‘to float’ ourselves through rough weather in life....they knew what they were getting into when they went to work for the Gov. and further that they were all warned to prepare for this.
It’s not like they aren’t going to get paid...and you’re right, if they can’t eat get another job.
They’re going to have the tearful stories even if qualify for unemployment.....which frankly if they do should be paid back since it’s not like they aren’t going to get paid.
I remember going to my dad and saying “If I can’t get a job in the next couple weeks, can I come home for a while? Of course he said yes. But I got a job the next week...an even better job.
So far the longest Federal Government Shutdown in the History of our Country (OMG) has so far resulted in ONE MISSED PAYCHECK, never mind the fact that every Federal Employee will be paid any Monies owed to them as soon as the Shutdown ends.
The Media, the Union and the DNC whining for weeks with every sob story in the world while nobody was financially impacted until yesterday. Pure Propaganda.
They have perks beyond belief and if they've been living beyond their means and not saving for a rainy day, screw 'em.
My dad was a blue collar factory worker and my mom was a housewife. We didn't have much, but we were always prepared for shut downs, strikes, lay-offs, whatever. We got by.
Welcome to the real world, gub'mint employees!
I and my brother always had a “home base” with mom just in case our plans didn’t work out when we ventured out of state. He never looked back, I went home once just to get resettled back north from Florida.
In 6 weeks I had work and an apartment.
