FLT-bird: ***”This quote about the tariff is from C R Vaughan, DD, Editor, Discussions by Robert Dabney, DD, LLD, Volume IV, Hamsburg VA Sprinkle Publications, 1979, pp 87-100 quoting the memoirs of Col John B Baldwin, a member of the VA Peace Commission.”***

The problem with Baldwin’s story is that he didn’t tell it until war’s end at which time Confederates were furiously destroying their own documents and concocting revisions to explain away what they did.
So historians discount it and Baldwin’s suggestion that Lincoln was concerned about losing not just miniscule revenues from Charleston, but all $50+ million annual Federal revenues.
None of the accounts I’ve read include reports from either Baldwin or those Maryland folks who visited Lincoln with similar results.

Instead they emphasize what the record shows: Lincoln’s concern to hold Fort Sumter, even if it meant military conflict because to do otherwise would be to lose the Union.
Lincoln was determined not to start war, but also not to shy away if it came.

There you go misstating it again. Here you are wrong in two different ways.

No, Lincoln wasn't worried about the "miniscule" revenues from Charleston, he was concerned with the more important problem of if he lets Charleston get away with it, the other ports will demand the same and now he has a *BIG* problem.

Secondly, the only reason the revenues at Charleston were then "miniscule", was because of the jiggered laws that funneled virtually all the import traffic into New York. Without those laws, the revenue that could be collected at Charleston would have greatly increased.

Lincoln’s concern to hold Fort Sumter, even if it meant military conflict because to do otherwise would be to lose the Union.

Because it is so important to preserve a Union in which people must be forced to remain in it by guns pointed at their backs.

The Coasts hate us. California/New York, they both *HATE* us, and want us to die. They are the wealthy urban elite Liberals, and today their gripe isn't slavery, it's how backwards we are because we want to adhere to Christian principles instead of adopting Abortion, Homosexuality, Gun Control, and third world "Diversity" that looks suspiciously like welfare parasites some of which have Jihad syndrome.

Your repetitive responding to respond in order to waste as much time as possible while failing to read and/or just claiming any source that is inconvenient for your arguments is automatically untrue, has likewise come to an end. Buh Bye.

9th attempt.
