A transgender woman has prevailed in her discrimination suit against a Minnesota women's football team and league.
In 2017, Christina Ginther sued the Minnesota Vixen and the Independent Women's Football League after the team barred her from playing because she was trans.
Ginther, 44, told MPR News that she didn't think being transgender would pose a problem for the Vixen. She learned about the team at the Twin Cities Pride Festival, and recalled her reaction as, "Oh, this an LGBTQ-friendly organization. Cool."
But after her tryouts, Ginther said, she got a surprising phone call from the team's owner, Laura Brown.
"She said, 'Well, your numbers were good. But in the process of drawing up player contracts, we looked at your social media and found out that you're transgender,' " Ginther recalled.
Ginther said Brown also told her the league didn't allow players who were born biologically male because of safety issues.
"I hung up the phone and just felt violated," Ginther said. "I mean, just the sense of, 'I'm a freak. I'm a defective. I am not worthy to be with this team.'"
The Vixen is considered a semi-pro team. It doesn't pay its players; in fact, the players pay to play.
A jury in Dakota County agreed this week that excluding Ginther violated the Minnesota Human Rights Act, which bars people from refusing to do business with someone else because of their sexual orientation.
Ginther told MPR News she sued because she wanted other transgender people to know this kind of discrimination is illegal.
"And the Vixen were arguing, 'You know, this is just football.' I was just really happy with my lawyer. He said, 'That's kind of the same story. It's only football. It's only a bus seat. It's only a bathroom. But it isn't.. We're talking about human dignity," Ginther said.
The jury awarded Ginther $20,000 in damages. Ginther's attorney, Nicholas May, said he believes this is the first jury verdict in favor of a transgender person in a discrimination claim in Minnesota.
"This was a jury of regular folks who came in, heard the evidence, and concluded that what happened here was wrong. It's something that we as Minnesotans should be proud of," May told MPR News.
After Ginther was denied a spot on the Vixen, she found acceptance on another team, the Minnesota Machine, which is part of a different women's football league.
She has since retired from the sport.
Why,in God’s name, don’t the *real* women refuse to play against this dude?
Just call him what his is, a transvestite.
Hate to break it to ya,dude...but you *are* a freak.
And you *are* defective.
Can we please have some men conveniently claim to be fluid-gender to play for the opposing women’s team and kick this guys ass on the field?
Exactly
“The law is an ass.”
Short version of story. Born-male person sees some easy money, in a league that normally doesn’t pay players.
Tries out for womens football, gets rejected for being born mail, get the state to extort $20,000 from the league.
Goes to another women’s league to get more money, but they actually let her play, so she retires instead.
I’d actually love to see a country put two trans-women on a beach volleyball team, and have them wipe the floor with the other teams and “win” a gold medal.
The sooner we can destroy women’s sports by letting born-males play them, the sooner we can move toward more common-sense policies.
And a team with two people would be the easiest place to start. Really we could probably do this with one of the best women, with a born-male.
I just felt violated
Im a freak
When MEN (and it is absolutely true that you CANNOT CHANGE YOUR GENDER) are allowed to play WOMENS sports, the true women will always get physically hurt. I really am surprised that trans women havent been disallowed on womens sports teams. The women who will compete on a field of play against trans women are too PC to support.
This was a jury of regular folks who came in, heard the evidence, and concluded that what happened here was wrong. It’s something that we as Minnesotans should be proud of,” May told MPR News.

That is just plain bull shit. The jury found that with the evidence presented that the law on the books was violated. Nothing about the justification of the law or the acceptance of the law.
How can we tell if a dog is male or female if it cant tell us what it identifies as?
She has since retired from the sport."
This was NEVER about football, the love of a sport or even acceptance ... it was about getting precedent in the courts and pushing the LGBTQ agenda through the justice system.
She has since retired from the sport."
FREAKS!!!!
Just replace trans with fake.
Whats the football equivalent of a fragging?
A chop block?
He should already be cited for “clipping”.
Ergo, trans-woman = fake woman.
When will this madness end? There is no such thing as a transgender. First of all, the use of the word “gender” to describe the sex of a person is wrong. SEX is the proper word.
Is the word too harsh? Maybe, because the word is used (wrongly) to describe sexual intercourse and that is soooo mean a word to hear with our virginal ears. When will we grow up?
The people who support the “rights” of insane persons (who think that it’s Okay to pretend to be the opposite sex) are guilty of enabling craziness, falsely representing them to be something that they are not. Stop the Madness!
