In reference to calls by some Democrats that Congress must impeach President Donald Trump, constitutional scholar and best selling author Alan Dershowitz said an impeachment will not work because the Republicans control the Senate and, if Democrats push it, such action will backfire and end up benefitting the president.
House Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) has been calling for the impeachment of Trump for over a year. Last week, new House Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) told a crowd of her supporters, "we're going to go in there and impeach the motherf***er."
On the Jan. 3 edition of Good Day New York, Fox 5, a co-host asked Dershowitz, Attorney and political expert Alan Dershowitz says starting impeachment proceedings against President Trump would be a mistake. Its actually the subject of his book, The Case Against the Democratic House Impeaching Trump. Why did you feel this topic was so important to write about?
Dershowitz, emeritus Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, said, Im a liberal Democrat. I campaigned hard for Hillary Clinton. I campaigned hard for the Democrats to takeover the House Im thrilled that the Democrats have taken over the House. Now theres a check and balance on our president."
"But for the Democrats to fritter their power away on impeaching the president its not going to work," he said. "Theyre not going to ever remove him. The Republicans control the Senate. He hasnt satisfied the constitutional criteria for impeachment.
Dershowitz, the author of 34 books, further said, "If they [Democrats] spend their energy and time listening to Maxine Waters, who now wants to impeach the president and the vice president as well, it will be utterly a waste of time."

Hey Dersh..release the emails
Always good to hear a democrat admit it. Doesn't happen often.
I would agree with one major qualification. If they ever found a real crime he committed (like tax fraud) that would be another matter. But they obviously dont have that as demonstrated by the fact that theyd say so if they had it after two and a half years of investigating.
Force an impeachment vote so everyone will have to vote. Won’t get out of the house and it will call the Democrats bluff. Also will dominate the demo house agenda..
The Democrat nuts should still go for it!
Come on kooks!
Yeah, we’re talking Al Green, Maxine Waters, Brad Sherman.
Come on you idiots! Go for it!
A major push in the Democrat House will be to get Trump's tax returns. If they get their hands on them, the Dems will claim they document tax fraud whether they do or not. They'll dig up some Dem tax lawyers and law professors to back them.
“The issue is never the issue,” a radical leftist once said. This impeachment gambit is all about keeping the Dems frothed up so they continue sending money to the DNC. Some things are just that simple.
The NYT did not actually say that Trump committed tax fraud. What it said was that he benefitted from his fathers stretching of the tax laws. But the IRS has been auditing Trumps tax returns nonstop for 30 years. I have no doubt that theyve made him pay taxes that he did not list in his returns. But that does not constitute fraud. He no doubt uses a tax advisor to file his return so its going to be hard to turn that into a tax fraud claim against Trump. Ive also heard that Mueller already has Trumps tax returns. Supposedly getting those tax returns was the first thing he did after he was appointed. Yet no charges so far.
Hard to tell which of him is genuine and which is protecting his hide for exposure to Epstein’s Lolita express.
Do the RATs believe that the Trump Deplorable base (which is growing every day) would sit passively quiet for their impeachment crap? Do the lunatic RATs think that the millions of Trump supporters would just rollover and say “oh well” and go away?
I don’t think the Marxist DemocRATs would like the big-time hornets nest they would ignite.
Thats why I worry about the grassy knoll so often
If they impeach him there will be a trial in the Senate, and all sorts of interesting things will come out, while the public listens with bated breath.
But being right won't count. As we saw in the Kavanaugh hearings, the Dems will claim a crime occurred even when none did. And their media spin machine and political academics will back them. They will start the impeachment machine despite the complete absence of grounds.
Trump's tax returns are sure to be very complex and subject to varying interpretations. House Dems will claim tax fraud even if Mueller passes on the issue and they will dredge up people with qualifications to support them.
It's no different than the fantasy that Comey's firing was obstruction of justice even though Mueller hasn't attempted to prosecute it because it wasn't and isn't.
Being a pompous ass (assuming he was, which is what Democrats are complaining about) never was impeachable... now if Democrats can field someone better there is a political answer. The problem is that they don’t have any patience and are set to go way WAY over the top.
I mean... their problem.
Another problem is that liberals are not liberal anymore. Liberality for thee but not for me! With the loss of that kind of sense of sincerity, the Democrats have little to sell except political fealty.
Also, when I hear attorneys talk about immigration reform, and health care reform, etc., it makes me ill, because one of the most pressing things we need in this country is legal reform. It shouldn't be that a person who is falsely accused can't defend themselves without bankrupting themselves and they families. It shouldn't be that whether or not you are found for or against in court is a function of the amount of money you have to pay for an attorney.
I don't hear Dershowitz or any other attorneys advocating for making legal representation more affordable and efficient for the people. I never hear them utter the term ‘legal reform’. Wonder why??
they families = their families (Apple laptop keyboard is a disaster).
The older breed of liberal understood how too much could become too much.
That won’t work either.
It’s up to Trump as to whether or not he’s impeached, and for a while there at Christmas time it looked like he was going for a YES. Thank God he reversed course.
