Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro says he is open to the possibility of the United States some day opening a military base in the South American country and added that Brazil was concerned about Russias ties to Venezuela.
"Depending on what might happen in the world, who knows if we might have to talk about a U.S. base in the future," the 63-year-old far-right president, who assumed office on January 1, told SBT television in an interview.
Bolsonaro, who said he is a fan of President Donald Trump, said he supports U.S. policy with regard to opposing the "authoritarian regimes" of left-wing governments in Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua.
Bolsonaro said he was "concerned" about the participation of the Russian Air Force in military drills in Venezuela in early December.
"We know what the intentions of the government of Nicolas Maduro are. Brazil must be concerned about that," he said.
Russia's Defense Ministry sent two nuclear-capable strategic bombers to Venezuela on December 10 in an unusual display of Russian military force in South America.
The bombers' arrival came just days after Maduro visited Moscow, seeking Kremlin support for his country, whose economy is in shambles and which is deeply in debt to Russia.
The United States condemned the Russian action at the time.

China too, has a firm grasp of several economies in the region.
An anti-Communist leader? What’s not to love???
I like this guy more and more. I hope he is still alive a year from now.
Brazil is the largest economy in Latin America and the 8th largest in the world. Let’s do a trade deal.
We should definitely do it. And I have lots of active duty friends who would simply jump at the chance to be stationed in Brasil!
Of course Brazil wants USA base. Why not? It is more foreign money coming in!
That is exactly why Germany & South Korea want our bases to stay after the wars have been over for 75 years.
Sorry Brazil, we already have 900 foreign military bases, outposts or stations abroad, and we just can’t afford any more because we are already $22,000,000,000,000 in debt!
Transfer them from Germany. Take those left behind and move them to Poland.
Sorry, libs. We’re going to cut many useless civilian government positions and build up our military forces to meet any potential threat. Politicians who tell you otherwise are playing with you, but vote for them anyway. Eat your whirled peas, or to bed early with you.
;-D
What with China stepping up operations in Africa we might want to look at upgrading our presence at São Paulo and getting into Recife and Belém with at least some naval assets.
.
Obama took an Obama on the Monroe Doctrine along with Carter. Maybe we can get some Monroe back.
He sounds good....time will tell.
Brazil’s leader wants a U.S. style Free Republic Constitution.
FR should give the man a free real User name.
Well not free, but real.
Ain’t no flies on this guy. Sounds like someone we should support.
“Sorry Brazil, we already have 900 foreign military bases, outposts or stations abroad, and we just cant afford any more because we are already $22,000,000,000,000 in debt!”
I get the sentiment, but how much extra does it cost to station a company of Marines in Brazil vs letting them sit in Camp Pendleton?
Doesn’t Brazil have its own military?
“Doesnt Brazil have its own military?”
Don’t know. If not, we could charge Brazil $10,000 p/Marine p/hr and make a nice profit. I’d re-enlist for that pay. How about you? We could retire forever after one week of service.
It may be already too late to save our country because the interest on that $22,000,000,000,000 debt will soon be BIGGER than our military budget! We need to shrink our military expenditures abroad, not expand them! Why are we still spending money in Germany when that war has been over for 75 years? How much more debt you wish to leave for your children and grand children?
Also keep in mind, every previous super-power in history met it’s demise not by military defeat, but by unaffordable debt caused in part by foreign military adventures.
We either learn from history or we will be doomed to repeat it.
