Utah Senator-Elect Mitt Romney continued to criticize President Trump on Wednesday, telling CNNs Jake Tapper that the country is as divided as Ive ever seen it. This after writing a scathing op-ed assailing the presidents character.
With his latest comments, Romney, the onetime presidential candidate and ex-governor of Massachusetts, was doubling down on claims he made earlier this week in a piece for The Washington Post. In that op-ed, he said Trump has not risen to the mantle of the office.
Romney had more to say about the presidency in his chat with Tapper: A leader has an impact, not just on policies but also on the character of the people who get to watch the person and I think in that scenario the president needs to focus more attention and hopefully make some changes there."
He continued: I think its very important for a president to demonstrate the qualities of integrity and honesty, forthrightness, empathy and respect for the institutions of our democratic republic.
Romney went on to say that as far forming of national character goes, we can do a better job.
I know what my principles are, what I think is right for the county and I know that right now the country is as divided as Ive ever seen it.
Trump responded to the Post op-ed during an earlier cabinet meeting: I wish Mitt could be more of a team player. I am surprised he did it this quickly. If he fought really hard against President Obama like he does against me, he wouldve won the election.

Translation, “you were supposed to just let us import “new Americans” and keep your mouths shut.”
It wasnt divided under Obama? Mitt can spare us the historical revisionism.
Weve always been divided. Trump didnt create it.
Romney, the great Divider....talking like the Democrat he really is
Well, maybe some day he'll clue the rest of us in on what they are. The only obvious principle that I've ever seen is that he thinks he is entitled to political power.
Nice going Utah. You basically elected a Douchewater Democrat.
The only we can end divisiveness is by agreeing to Democrat policies.
Never!

I am telling you all this right now.
I will never ever again do a hold my nose vote for president ever again.
They send up a sh1t samdwich for us to vote for, I am no longer going to do it. Because its really then either uniparty candidate 1, or uniparty candidate 2. And I’m gonna do it.
Mitts only principles are what gets him in the headlines... and theyre for sale.
Mittens should stop playing games and just switch parties already.
He is not yet sworn in and has already managed to wear out his welcome. This has got to be a new record for a Senator.
The country has been spiraling in that direction for decades now. Progressives made it their mission to play whatever card they could to keep dividing the country (race, sex, rich/poor, elimination of the middle class, abortion, non-existent genders, ...).
This is the racist guy that ran against our First Black President, isn’t it? You’d think he’d have learned something.
It did not take long for Mittens to show his true colors.
It must have been divided worse when you ran for President, because you lost to Obama.
I think Mitt is trying to clear the way so he and Paul Ryan will have another shot in 2020.
Just my theory...or one of them, at least.
He really is pathetic, even for a politician.
Mitt, it’s the media nad the globalists doing the dividing, not Trump.
You probably plan to add to that division, don’t you?
Rise to the mantle? What does that mean? Idiot mixed metaphor alert.
