"I am bothered that someone saw him carrying a rifle bag prior to the shooting."

That someone was a typical Broward County High School Student. He could have tackled the shooter right there in the hallway but didn't. Maybe we should question him as to why he did nothing knowing a disaster was about to take place.

Nobody “knew” a disaster was about to happen. Certainly not any of the students. The “warning signs” were not that obvious. They never are.

Some forum members here might - might - identify a “rifle bag” on sight , but it’s less likely that “a typical Broward County High School Student” could do so. Besides, seeing a padded soft-side gun case cannot tell you what’s inside it.

Students today are trained from kindergarten (or earlier) on up, never to defend themselves - not even in the most innocuous playground scuffle. People caught in a violent incident revert to their training.

It takes courage, on top of training, for a fully armed soldier to get up, break cover, and charge into hostile fire. Not very likely that a high schooler would spontaneously find that sort of courage. And counterattacking - barehanded - a perp shooting at you with a rifle might demand a bit more courage.

All high schoolers are carefully, meticulously trained to be the exact opposite of courageous.
