Doug Schoen: Trump is to blame for government shutdown, but border security is important
Fox News ^ | December 23, 2018 1 hr ago | Doug Schoen

The President's strategy to shut down the government for the sake of a border wall only days before the Democrats assume majority control of the House is foolish and wrong.

This shutdown also comes just days after a contentious Oval Office meeting between President Trump, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and presumptive Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi

President Trump told the Democratic leaders he would take full responsibility if the government were to shut down – and now he has it.

Yet the president is attempting to blame the Democrats for this shutdown, even though he is the one who changed his mind at the last minute is refusing to budge from his demand for $5 billion for his border wall.

In a joint statement released by both Schumer and Pelosi, the Democratic leaders rightfully refused to back down from President Trump’s calls to shut down the government. They said that “President Trump threw a temper tantrum” and highlighted the fact that “President Trump has said more than 25times that he wanted a shutdown.”

And while the government shutdown is not a good thing, it does necessitate an important debate over the main issue at hand: border security.

I say this because unlike many other Democrats I do believe and indeed support strong border security utilizing modern technologies, which would in many places replace a wall.

Indeed, the president’s success and re-election prospects depend fully on his ability to drive compromise on his key issues like immigration, as well as health care. These are two key issues that were fundamental to the Democrats successfully winning back the House in November.

House and Senate Democrats were willing to compromise to find a deal that would keep the government open and secure our borders.

Mr. President, you should take their deal.

I wonder if he likes pizza?
Just your typical leftist loon.
He is still upset that Hillary lost.
If he could, he would take away your right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. He is just better at disguising his true beliefs.

The focus on "modern technologies" before a wall or instead of a wall is just the democrats planning another cash pipeline to flood cash through for their pals in Silicon Valley.

Cost overruns will be huge proportionately as large as those for the CA High Speed Rail scam or the F35. Then if anything is in place there will be one techie excuse after another for why the delivered part of the system or the entire system failed for a month or two now and again. The excuses will be accompanied by proposals for expensive "this time will be the charm" fixes. All handled by new Congressional committees claiming to oversea and improve the tech fence.

Trump knows concrete and steel construction inside out. I seriously doubt he can be suckered into some kind of boondoggle when that's the way a border security barrier is built. Tech, not so much, and Congress Critters know even less. Congress does know who to direct cash to Silicon Valley in order to get the best ROI with donations above and below the table flowing back to select Congress Critters.

There absolutely is a place for technology in border security. The Israeli wall works. Start with the same type of wall then add tech as required. Not required to give tech companies a big lab to try out their ideas in, but that actually and provably works.

Having a wall in place rather than letting the money grubbers in Congress get away with pretending that tech alone or tech with a cute little fence or porous wall will solve the problem is a must. A real wall first is what has to happen to keep the democrats and their RINO allies from turning it into nothing but an expensive fiasco designed from the start to be just that.

Relying primarily on tech will just lead to Congress Critters writing their, "We told you can't control the border" speeches at the same time that they're funding whatever they decide to fund.

Build the wall. Once it's in place add technology a little at a time making sure each system works as advertised and can't be subverted before adding any more.

It is the Schumer shutdown for now. Could become the Pelosi/Schumer shutdown next year.

Why is it Trump’s fault? It is up to Congress to send him an appropriation bill to either sign or veto.

Trump is responsible for easing the pain, causing it to be a partial shutdown while Obama purposely tried to make the shutdown as painful as possible.

“Trump is to blame”... of course.. heap everything onto Trump!

You can use those words... you do that all the time. Your view is if Trump does not give in and agree with the dems, it’s his fault. No, it’s the dems who won’t give in and put a wall up. America wants a wall. Trump promised a wall. You, dems, are the obstructionists and the fault is yours. You did not win the election in 2016. Trump did! You know what he promised the people.. and you are hell bent on doing this to Trump to get back at him.

You care nothing for the country.. you care nothing for the people!

“..even though he (Trump) is the one who changed his mind at the last minute is refusing to budge from his demand for $5 billion for his border wall.”

Huh? Doesn’t that statement refute itself? “changed his mind” and “refusing to budge” ...? If he’s refusing to budge, then he didn’t change his mind.

Weasel words. Like WHAT? A “stop! Go home now” sign? Yeah, that’ll work.

“President Trump told the Democratic leaders he would take full responsibility if the government were to shut down – and now he has it.”

Democrats don’t know how to interpret the Donald. Of course he was going to blame the Democrats for lack of wall funding. And who isn’t compromising? It’s Shumer the tumor and pecker puss Pelosi behaving like spoiled brats.
