Congress shouldn’t be paid anything. If candidates can’t succeed in the private sector they shouldn’t be allowed to hold office. Our founding fathers were wise enough to give the vote only to freeholders.

On some level that makes sense. But then consider the old days, back when police officers didn’t have a union.They were paid very little, and a lot of cops had to find work on the side. They were vulnerable to bribery.

Bribery of Congressmen is enough of a problem now, with the bribes disguised as “campaign contributions”. I suspect that if their salaries were reduced, you’d see even more of that.

In Switzerland the Bundesrat all have day jobs, and only get a pittance for their time serving as leaders. I agree.
