Newly elected New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a self-described Democratic socialist, called for a furlough of congressional salaries in the event of another government shutdown on Saturday.

I’d go further than that. They should not get back pay for the shutdown that they themselves caused. No pay at all for them for the time government is down.
She is virtue signalling, and mainly because she isn’t earning a paycheck yet so it wouldn’t effect her for at least a few weeks, which she’s expecting the shutdown being over by then.
And she said the journalists in D.C. write stuff with no facts behind it.
I agree. Virtue signaling. Senators and House members continue to get paid through a government shutdown because their salaries are literally written into the Constitution. Article 1, Section 6
I would not underestimate her. She may look goofy but she will be groomed like Obama.

I’m a rabid conservative and as such there’s probably very little we agree on, but I’m totally in with your tweet regarding congressional pay during government shutdowns that they themselves caused.
I would even go a step further - unlike the rest of the federal employees, there should be no retroactive pay for congressmen once the shutdown is over. You can even include the president in that.
I hope when you officially start your term you introduce this as your first bill. It will have tremendous support at the grassroot level on both the left and the right, and I have a feeling that it will easily pass because your colleagues will be too embarrassed to vote against it.

Many 'tea' party members who got elected crashed and burned under the temptations of such influences. I don't know if they really believed what they were elected on.

Wait til she finds out what really goes on in Congress — the affairs, the exemptions from laws they pass, the financial self enrichment, the bribes, the serious pressure to vote a certain way, etc. Maybe she will release the names of the Congressmen who used the slush fund to pay off sexual harassment suits.
My guess is that Pelosi will bring her in line.

She’s right, but she doesn’t join Congress until the new one convenes in January. So, she won’t be losing any paychecks, but is politically making points. She would be taken to the woodshed by Nancy if she was already sworn in.

Couldn’t more strongly disagree. She’s set herself up as one of the takers in a socialist world — one of the elites — so she will always see herself at the top of any food chain. She will learn (if she doesn’t already know) why she needs the masses dumb and poor — to continue to put her in office since she obviously has no other marketable skill. She will end up BEING Bernie — someone with absolutely no real world experience and only a politician’s title.
Why in the world would you think that being in Washington with other leftist idiots is going to cure her of any of this? Being in Washington gets even so-called (or one time) conservatives drinking the kool-aid.
