Here's some history for ya: Apartheid was a horrible, crappy policy that made Jim Crow look like MLK Jr and now unfortunately whites there are reaping the blowback.

There would have been many blacks then who would have done everything they can to be civilized South Africans.

So it's not a false assumption, because I'm not talking about the entire continent of Africa. I'm talking about the several thousand or so black Africans living in SA at the time.
This was done here too, but didn't work out the same way.

You may have looked up Booker T. Washington, saw the "ATLANTA COMPROMISE", but aren't really clear about what any of that means.

I'm NOT defending the blacks who are about to go on a killing spree.
Just saying that if whites would have simply given blacks basic rights and freedom none of what's going down now would be happening. Hell I'm not even arguing that they become forcefully integrated; I'm sure the blacks in SA would have had their own families and communities still.

I have to agree with Extremely, etc., at least partially. The Brits treated black SA’s brutally. Not that the blacks were faultless. But it’s the same everywhere. If people lived their Christianity, there wouldn’t be so much hatred and violence. Of course, there’d be a lot of Christian martyrs in the process...but the Brits ruled with an iron fist, whomever they conquered. Of course they did “civilize” most of the world, while they were at it. They would have done the same to us, if we had let them. Complicated stuff, though. If we could only go back in time...I’m afraid the results would be the same, human nature being what it is.
God help them. I’d be for taking them in. Of course, we’d have to take in genocide victims everywhere. That’s complicated.
So the white SA government allowed themselves to be divided and conquered then. Sounds like the GOP here.

Booker T Washington was not a poverty-pimp or a communist like W.E.B DuBois or Marcus Garvey.
The Atlanta Compromise was about giving blacks basic rights and job/educational opportunities in exchange for stopping blatant discrimination and violence against them. He didn't want integration, even.
The Brits treated white Boers terribly, too. They put them in concentration camps, the first if I recall my history correctly.

That certainly would have been the moral thing to do. But would the outcome have been any different? Consider Yugoslavia. Every person there had equal rights. Yet in 1991 the place erupted into tribal violence, and the country broke apart.
Let me start by saying that all your points are salient - I have spent a lot of time in SA on business, and the place is a veritable powder keg. The ground swell of disappointment (with their lot in life) and disenchantment (with the promise of ‘freedom’ not bearing fruit) is progressing slowly but surely towards a precipice of social dislocation and (maybe) violence. Oh, and the hate is not just towards whites - blacks like me from other countries are seen as invaders, and while South African whites have been attacked by South African blacks it has not been anywhere near the scale that non-South African blacks are attacked by South African blacks. So I am very cognizant of the issues in the country.
It was just so refreshing to have a FReeper call it as it is. Not bringing in opinion or marching to the (often silly) party line, but offering cold hard facts. Refreshing, but also hilarious since you’ll get flamed (and I hope to enjoy those responsss - which I am certain will be ‘grounded’ in what people heard on radio/tv and nothing more).
South Africa cannot be fixed, and it’s a direct outcome of apartheid. The blacks there were never educated - and even in more recent years its only the more upper crust SA blacks that have a good education (three years ago there was a study that showed over 60% of SA schools don’t even have a working toilet but rely on pit latrines). Many SA blacks will never be financially stable, and they do not have the resources to lift themselves out of the mire and muck. Many still live in the ‘bantustans’ where they were kept away from the very developed cities, and those in the cities live in crime-ridden slums where they have zero opportunity. The road to Cape Town’s airport has high walls that hide the slum near the airport, but flying in or out exposes it in all its ‘glory’ if someone simple peeps out the window.
What really complicates things in SA is that (a) it is a really developed economy (in the four big cities), and (b) the wealth concentration is uniquely observable. To show this, compare SA with Kenya and Nigeria. All three countries have super rich blacks that form an elite, but the thing about SA is that it is relatively small and very recent. This is contrasted to a place like Kenya that has had black elite since the 60s, and Nigeria where there are certain places with so much money that the Nigerian super rich are beginning to compete with the Arab wealthy in shopping sprees in London. In SA the average black only sees poverty, and when they look at whites they see a subset of the population (seemingly) living with plenty. Seemingly because I have a bunch of SA white friends (most foreign blacks can only have white friends there) who have to work hard for every single Rand they earn.
The powder keg is present, all it needs is one spark to result in a black version of the Arab Spring. Tension is rising in a country where you’ll find homeless sleeping in the streets outside Ferrari dealerships, where people lack medical care in a country that performed the first heart surgery done in the world, and having abysmal education in a country with one of the best universities in the globe.
All of this stems from policies that made a lot of ‘sense’ to the creators of apartheid many decades ago, but have now created an intense hatred so fiery that it is only a matter of time before some catalytic event sparks off Gehenna.
So - thanks for a refreshing post, and I’m sure you will get flamed for saying a truth that digs deeper than what Tucker Carlson at Fox would say (I agree with him that SA has a real issue and whites are being targeted btw) and looks at what the genesis was.
SA cannot be fixed - and the question is when. If I was white and living in a South Africa I would sell my vineyards to the Chinese and split!

If Apartheid was oh just SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO horrible ( and I;m not promoting it ), then WHY did thousands of blacks, from other nations keep trying to ILLEGALLY INVADE South Africa?
Why, after a year and a bit of Mande3la being president, did the government owned and by then black run newspapers, in RSA all have 3/4th of the front pages say: "BRING BACK APARTHEID" ?

When the Dutch and French first landed, the San/Bushmen, who were nomads and owned/had no land, were sometime seen.
The Zulus were in other parts and the Boers never saw them in the beginning. When they did, yes, there were a few skirmishes, but also, there were treats and land bought.
And no, the blacks, even under Apartheid were NOT forbidden to go to school; they were told to go to school.

You are correct that apartheid should have never happened, it was wrong. However this is not karma most of these whites had nothing to do with apartheid because most of them would have been children. These whites dont deserve to lose their rights or lives anymore than the blacks who were once oppressed did.
