I remember when at the height of Watergate, Soviet leader Brezhnev asked Nixon why he didn’t surround the White House with tanks.

I may be missing something, but the cost of most of the “concessions” that Macron was offering would have fallen on employers ... extra bonuses, tax-free overtime, 100 Euro/month increase in minimum wage ...

What a coward. Then, every socialist I’ve ever met is a coward so it should be no surprise.

A totally different situation. The yellow vest movement is supposedly a mix of both left and right that oppose Macron.
With obama, the left is on his side. Any massive protests by the right would have been met by counter protesting and aggression by the left. It would have been absolute chaos. The cops would have been the ones to fix it.
The army is sworn to defend the Constitution. If obama had done something very obvious, like nullify the 2A or any other important element in the Constitution, then that would give legal authority for the Army to step in. But that would never happen since the left has all but taken over the military.

> I wonder if the army would have deserted Obama had enough protesters and protesting had come to Washington? <
Obama was a disaster...but I’d hope that the generals would have strictly followed the Rule of Law. And so unless Congress removes him, the President is C-in-C. His lawful orders must be obeyed. To do otherwise would open a Pandora’s Box of problems.
By the way, the movie ‘Seven Days in May’ covered this topic. Except for the preachy ending, it’s a good movie. If you haven’t seen it, get it. Here’s the trailer.

Lets not get too far out with our analogies Macron is no Ceaușescu by any stretch! If you think so you need to research Ceaușescu. If Macron flees in disgrace thats probably enough. If the 5th Republic falls I worry what gets put in its place. Whatever comes next is still going to be somewhat socialist, then French are convinced they have to have that. A Le Pen-like government if thats what they end up with is not going to see Adam Smith as anything more then a item of historical interest. Macron fleeing is another nail in the EU coffin as well as more nails in the whole Global Warming Schtick! Hopefully its all leads to confronting the real European problem - illegal immigration & non-assimilation by Muslims destroying European culture.
