No one else wants the job, and no one has a better idea of how to solve this riddle. We’re back where we were, an unpopular PM with no way to get her Brexit solution through the House of Commons.
Now we have a hard forced exit...they better start spinning up trade agreements.

The problem is that the referendum was a constitutional innovation in the UK, with no measures taken before the voting to bind the Crown in Parliament (the actual sovereign) to the result.
The House of Commons has a very large Remain majority, as I understand it, and they will never agree to any Brexit other than a fake one.

Isn’t it more correct to say she preserved herself by forestalling a No Confidence Vote in the Commons by holding a winning a party vote.

There is definitely no majority for a hard Brexit. The total destruction of the British economy is not a popular choice among people with stakes in that economy.
She won the no-confidence vote only because she agreed to step down before the 2022 elections.
Wouldn’t/shouldn’t her opponents have known a vote count before asking for this?

That is irrelevant, if she yokes Britain to the EU in the meantime - which she has every intention of doing. She was and remains a remainer.

Secret ballot. Opponents were hoping MPs would vote differently in secret than what they said publicly.
May also said she would not run in the next election, which might have gotten her extra votes.
That’s certainly true. No hard Brexit will occur. But their issue is somewhat similar to ours - a border dispute.
The left doesn’t want to return to an actual border between Ireland and Northern Ireland now that it’s become an open border under the EU. The right doesn’t like the suggested “backstop” which would bind the UK to a customs treaty they can’t exit from without EU approval. That’s sort of like giving Trump the money for the wall but making it impossible for it to actually be built without the approval of Nancy Pelosi.
The obvious solution is to return to an actual border and let the EU shove their backstop up their backsides.
