AFGE says it hopes the president works with Congressional leadership to ensure federal workers dont get left out in the cold this holiday season
WASHINGTON This morning Democratic leadership met with President Trump to discuss the final spending bill of the year and hopefully avoid a partial government shutdown at midnight on December 22. The shutdown would be the third in 2018, disrupting work and pay for hundreds of thousands of federal workers in the middle of the holiday season.
In response to todays meeting, and the uncertainty surrounding the potential partial shutdown in 11 days, American Federation of Government Employees National President J. David Cox Sr. issued the following statement:
Every time we face a government shutdown, the paychecks our members and their families rely on suddenly become a political football. The most basic job of Congress is to fund federal agencies. Passing short, successive continuing resolutions (CRs) is an abdication of that responsibility.
As the union that represents 700,000 federal and D.C. government workers, we call on Congress and the administration to fund the government for the remainder of the fiscal year.
Our members take home an average of around $500 each week. Any interruption in their pay will have a devastating impact on them, their families, and their communities.
TSA officers, Border Patrol agents, correctional officers, and other federal law enforcement officers will continue to put their lives on the line whether they receive their paychecks or not, and this prospect alone should motivate Congress and the administration to do their work.
Our members are asking how they are supposed to pay for rent, food, and gas if they are required to work without a paycheck. The holiday season makes these inquiries especially heart-wrenching.
Congress and the President should not hold agency funding hostage to controversial policies unrelated to the budget. We call upon them to pass a full-year funding bill that includes the modest pay adjustment for federal employees already agreed to by the Senate.
Government unions must be absolutely and completely abolished immediately.
I pray he shuts it down ....and goes on Television for a detailed showing of exactly what the commies (dem’s &rino’ both) are willing to allow to happen to we the citizenry whiule they are sheparded around with armed personal ...so tired of that arrogant schmuck shumer and the tired old hag pelosi...rub it in that THEY are the reason and also we already know all essential services are open...as far as the union fed scumbags they can go f themselves...they would never get what they have in the private sector...can’t stand the way our own people screw us...fk em’ hard President Trump that would be a YUGE Christmas present to your base of which I am one.
I’d imagine that offices are on skeleton crews from Dec 22 until Jan 2 - lots of temp agency working, tho.
I hope we’re not depending on a friggin’ commie union to tell us which “families” are “hardworking” and which aren’t.
Gov employees make far more than most ever will.
You do have to include cost of benefits, though.
As predictable as the Sun coming up in the morning.
They get paid the end of this week. Their next Payday is the end of the Month. The so called “shutdown” is on the 21st.
Must be lots of Federal Employees living paycheck to paycheck and hand to mouth. cough cough
Time to get some Payday Loans I guess, poor things.
federal employees should not be unionzed this is a plan hatched by the rats to get campaign funding
There are very few people at working government offices the two weeks surrounding Christmas. They are all on vacation.
Federal workers who use work resources to commit RESIST will have to do it on their own time if there’s a shutdown.
Let's just get it done, the wall that is.
The Dems would never shut down the non-essential, non-community facing government jobs because it did not suit their propaganda purposes. Hopefully, the President will not fall victim to the bureaucrats trying to pull the same media scam on his watch.
Well right off the bat I say BS to the AFGE. Why aren’t they asking congressional leaders (Pelosi and Schumer) to work with the President rather than the President work with them. Subtle difference but an important one.,
Shutdowns seriously hamper a federal worker’s looking at porn time.
There should never, ever have been government employee unions. Working for government is a privilege. Terminate all government employee unions.
I say crush them and very publicly. it sucks for the dependents, but the wage earners are leeches.
and yes I took several tough pills today . . . deal with it.
If I were Trump:
“Obama made the last shutdown as painful as possible.
We will make this one as painless as possible.
99% won’t notice.
No back pay this time.
If more than 30 days, they’re all fired.
Good thing the private sector is doing so well.”
$350,000,000 a week in take home pay.
There HAVE to be a large umber of those paychecks going to non-essential persons. Permanently Non-Essential.
“Modest Pay Adjustment for Federal Employees” already agreed to by Congress?
How much was that?
The Fed employees kept getting annual increases under Obama, when he stiffed retirees 4 times in 8 years.
Here is a plan these union puppets must have never considered. Stop paying union dues and put the money into a emergency fund. Then you will have the resources to tide you through these situations.
I doubt that Pelosi and Shumer think President Trump is bluffing so they will fold like a cheap tent in a hurricane. There ain’t gonna be no friggin shut down. They know they aren’ dealing with Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnel this time.
Federal workers get paid on the 14th. It will not affect their holiday.
