I found this very hard to believe: A giant company, whose code of conduct used to be "Don't be evil, is now working on a censorship and surveillance project for the Chinese government.
The communist Chinese government. The company is Google. Once the darling of technology. Now helping to create China's version of Big Brother. I'll explain.
Its called Project Dragonfly. Its a search engine designed especially for China. It would allow the authorities there to exercise strong censorship power. If, for example, someone searched for "human rights" or "protests, the authorities would be alerted and no search results would be shown.
Thats exactly what the government wants: Control what people are allowed to know, and identify "troublemakers." Privacy? Forget about it. Google is complicit in the denial of freedom to over a billion people.
But there's more, and its even more troubling. Parts of Dragonfly would be physically in China, and therefore subject to Chinese law. That means the authorities could track individuals through their cell phones. They would know their exact location, and their history. Rounding up dissidents has never been easier. And Google is helping.

Goolag is KKKratzis.
I’m thinking Google read the Harry Potter novels and their true motto is: “I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.”
Google has even managed to exceed Microsoft as probably the most crooked, sleazy company in the multiverse.
They’d sell you, your family, and all future offspring to China in a heartbeat.
On a related note, it is very easy for Google to take over your computers access to the internet without you knowing about it. Happened on my computer. They substituted the DNS for my own and without me knowing about it.
Stu, they’ve been helping the ChiComs censor the internet for over a decade now.
The commie government in China is just what Googulag would like to see in America and elsewhere. It’s the dream of an upper elite running the lives of all us plebs. Allowing capitalism as long as it serves the interests of the party. Nicely authoritarian because only technocrats can save us from ourselves.
Its not just Google, don’t forget large infrastructure hardware companies bowed down to China and did what they were told.
Google is evil
Stay away
You found this hard to believe? Why? Google is an information company - all of their ancillary services and products feed that database. They have crept into every aspect of your life (especially if you use their products, services, and software). Android cell phone or tablet? They get access to all of your web traffic, phone calls, etc. And you voluntarily give up most of it simply by using their platforms (part of the user agreement you have to agree to).
And in contrast to at least one other large tech company, Google has a history of being VERY cozy and accommodating to law enforcement and government officials, including constructing a major backbone connection from their servers to the NSA. The fact that they would play friendly with the Chi-Coms is absolutely not surprising.
They’ll do it in this country when the demonrats are back in charge.
You seem to know now. How did you catch them? Did they do it up front or was it hidden, somehow?
Can you suggest a quick check?
My DNS ip address software stopped working. My ip4 hardware settings on my nic were changed to Googles DNS. The DNS software runs everytime I boot that PC. It stopped working a few days ago so it happened recently. I think that it was Google Earth.
I would not have knowingly allowed this because it would break my my DNS filtering service.
I was very surprised at how easily it happened. Once you control someone’s DNS, you can block sites that you deem unworthy.
I want to make sure this doesn't happen to me. You obviously are way more knowledgeable than me. I guess if I check the DNS settings in my router it would be obvious? I don't think I even have DNS software. The router is the only place I know of that stores DNS locally.
Google is way more evil than I ever imagined and I have a strong imagination. That seems criminal to me and it has Google's name right on it. Talk about in your face!
Here is a procedure to check your settings.

Also, after further review on line, it appears that Google introduced their DNS very recently. The date on this article was Oct 2018.

Google tout it as being faster. But it gives them too much power and yes, if they so chose, they could block Free Republic. Maybe not now but definitely in the future.
Too much power in the hands of an entity that doesn't think the way that I do.
Worst of all, I didn't know that it had changed. BTW, I use OpenDNS.
Thanks for holding my hand, much appreciated.
I’m using Comcast dns and Google hasn’t touched them. I’ll look into opendns, seems like I used them onceupon a time.
What does your DNS software do? Any chance that was how Google did their misdeeds?
The small OpenDNS software program runs on the my most used PC and updates my IP address at OpenDNS. If you don't pay extra, your ISP may periodically change your IP address and if OpenDNS doesn't recognize your IP address, it will not know to redirect your access to the internet.
You can set up porn filters and other filters so that the family will be protected from the nasty things on the internet. It works really well. Is it perfect? No, and there are ways around it if you know what you are doing. But for the average user, it works really well. Some small and larger businesses use OpenDNS.
If you have a fixed IP address, it simplifies things a bit. Also, some routers have embedded functions that will do the same as their software however I have never been able to get them to work so I run this program on the one computer.
Best of all, you don't need extra software like netnanny on each of your computers since it is all managed through your router. I like simplicity! And, again it is free or $20 per year.
Normally, a person will not know that their DNS settings have been changed. And apparently it is a easy thing to do — changing your NIC hardware settings without the user knowing it.
I suspect that this is how Google and China control access to the Internet. Services like OpenDNS and Google DNS can block individual sites or whole groups and categories of sites. If you block access to certain sites on the Internet, then you control the flow of information. Lastly, I don't know exactly which software program changed my DNS settings. But they were changed and recently. I had to debug it since my router still had the OpenDNS address settings."
