On the day after GHWB's funeral, I am reminded of a speech he gave in which he misidentified September 7 as Pearl Harbor Day. You could hear people in the audience murmuring that he was wrong. It was a good example of what can go wrong when a speaker departs from his script.

On the day after GHWB's funeral, I am reminded of a speech he gave in which he misidentified September 7 as Pearl Harbor Day.I remember that gaffe very well. This was in the midst of the 1988 general election against Mike Dukakis. When I heard it repeated on the news that night, I thought he might have blown the whole campaign and that we would get stuck with Mike Dukakis. However it blew over pretty quickly, mostly in part due to the fact that Bush actually served in that war so people couldn't criticize him all that much.
Now if Dan Quayle had said it...it would still be a running gag today.
