American companies that import products are paying record amounts in customs duties as more tariffs imposed by the Trump administration take effect.
Tariff collections topped $5 billion in October, according to data from the Treasury Department and from Census Bureau data analyzed and released by Tariffs Hurt the Heartland, a lobbying coalition of manufacturing, farming and technology groups.

"Tariff collections topped $5 billion in October"
"The amount of tariffs being paid by U.S. importers has doubled since May"
"In October, more than 2% of federal receipts came from tariffs, the most in at least two decades."
Reading the story gave me a warm fuzzy feeling inside. As Trump said, I'm a Tariff Man.
At Target yesterday to buy a couple of things. Wanted some Q-Tips. Picked up the Target brand, looked on the back and it was made in China. Put it back and grabbed the Unilever brand which was made in the USA. Price difference was about 30 cents, or about 10%. Raising tariffs to 25% on Chinese goods would price them out of the market. That's what I want; 25% tariffs or bust!
the whole idea is to stop importing and start producing...........so OUR people can have the jobs and pay for products made here that cost more.
Why don’t I ever read about American companies which have been hurt by chinese import tariffs since well before Trump?
Maybe, and I was just thinking, maybe, you can buy American. And guess what, you won’t be paying the tariff and would be helping out your own country for once.
“In October, more than 2% of federal receipts”
Gee, maybe we could reduce the income tax by the equivalent amount?
We didn’t need an income tax when the country was financed by customs “imposts”.
Say...they could always import those jobs back into the USA, eh?
$5 billion equals about $15 per person. How many thousands now have jobs and are paying taxes?
Or the companies bankrupted because they couldn’t compete with cheap Chinese labor?
Hey...I have an idea. How about searching/advertising for DOMESTIC SOURCES? Businesses can (and will) DEVELOP the capability to meet demands and needs.
Or the companies bankrupted because they couldnt compete with cheap Chinese labor?
As is happening to our drug and drug ingredient companies right now?
China now has control of our drugs, and our militarys drugs. Not good.
WSJ getting to be a rag sheet.
The United States of America, unlike most corporations, can’t be managed to a quarterly report.
They should find some productive work to do.
Try the Alliance for American Manufacturing. That’s *not* a commie organization with a fake name, and there are more like it. They’re not against the tariffs.
I’ve been paying attention and trying to buy more products that are made in the U.S.A., too. Many of the small items are made here. For one example, there’s Kirk’s soap. It’s more old fashioned, made with safer ingredients and made in the U.S.A. The bars are larger and harder, and they seem to go about as far as the main competitor, money-wise.
Many other items that are made here in small shops can be ordered from around the Net. Some of them are more expensive but most of them, much higher in quality.
Me too. I wouldn’t see mind seeing them 40% or 50% until our industries come back. Especially on anything high tech.
I read just last week, and I’m sorry I do not remember where and can’t link the source, that tariffs were having hardly any effect on manufacturing costs here.
I pay a slightly higher price for US made goods because chicom goods are often not as good and I am very happy to have arrived at a place in life where I can choose value over price when I can get value.
As just one example of chicom junk, I bought five outdoor outlet covers last week, two of them did not have a hole for the screws to attach them to the outlet. Chicom quality control is all but non existent.
Chicom screws and bolts are junk made from the easiest to machine soft metal that can be had. I have not tested Grade 3 for yield strength but know from experience they are very low yield since they will not torque properly without stripping the threads. I hope all the stuff in China is built with the same substandard fasteners they ship to us and that the failures end tragically. The converse of this is to wonder how many of our things are held together in a substandard way by substandard fasteners?
Making fly swatters and plastic toys in china is not important nor are Q-tips but having a manufacturing base here that builds critical components for an arsenal is very important. So is not having an entire nation that works to feed chinese industry and people.
Because that would spoil their narrative
