The Wizard of Oz is such a classic film that I dont remember the first time I saw it. It seemed to be on TV every Christmas during my childhood and became a part of my cultural education, a formative film language. A new study claims the film, which went through a staggering run of directors, writers, songwriters and script edits during its production, is the most influential film ever. I dont know about that, but I frequently rewatch it to study how great film-making can make any story fly like a wicked witchs monkey.
Judy Garlands performance as Dorothy is a wonder of innocence, sensitivity and determination. At the start of the film, she wonders what lies over the rainbow and then, in a concussed dream, enters the rainbow. The combination of imaginative anything-is-possible scale and picaresque narrative style is totally cohesive, so that what could have been a discordant riot of songs, set pieces, production design, acting styles and plot somehow barrel along together, from the special effects of the tornado scenes to the twinkling transformation into Technicolor, to the sinister and deliberately fake-looking malachite-green art-deco sets of Emerald City. Then theres the surging music, in which every group song increases in volume and hysteria until theres a kind of bullying mania to it.

This woman definitely has issues.
Well we know who the Wicked Witch is.......
The ACTUAL story is QUITE darker than the movie.
To say the least.
But yes, this woman is a nut.
Uh, I thought the witch and flying monkey just departed. Did I say that out loud?
In a way, the writer may be right... the people of the land stopped the evil designs of the wicked witch... something akin to 2016.
Yet another Guardian reporter mistaking a newspaper column for a therapist’s couch.
My Dad grew up down the street from MGM he and his buddies would tease the little people that invaded the neighborhood
Well, considering that the “Guardian” is as “RED” as it gets in the U.K. ...
Very expected :p
Holy crap, someone is off their meds.
Let’s grant the authoress’ premise that the wizard is a great con artist. He still managed to get Hillary Clinton turned into a puddle of goo.
why am I reading these messages into this film, at this moment?
Because youre an idiot.
And Emerald City appears quite prosperous and everyone leaves better because he ultimately allows the main characters to thrive on their own abilities.
Gross. What is a “Bidisha”?
Really? I d/l’d it off of Gutenberg a few years ago, but haven’t gotten around to reading it.
It really was a political satire on the economic arguments of the times, the silver or gold standard. There were a couple of dozen "OZ" books. OZ-oz. ounce.
They really cannot be that stupid.
But, they are.
I really fell sorry for the UK.
