AUSTIN, Texas U.S. leaders say Vladimir Putin used a familiar cyber playbook to muck around in the midterm elections last month, but intelligence officials and key lawmakers believe a much more sinister, potentially devastating threat lies just down the road one that represents an attack on reality itself.
Policy insiders and senators of both parties believe the Russian president or other actors hostile to the U.S. will rely on deep fakes to throw the 2020 presidential election cycle into chaos, taking their campaign to influence American voters and destabilize society to a new level.
The eerie process, which relies on cutting-edge, deep-learning algorithm technology, produces high-quality audio and video of individuals saying things they never said or doing things they never did. The phony video, analysts say, will be virtually indistinguishable from real footage, mimicking voices, speaking patterns, facial expressions and surroundings to a frighteningly realistic degree.
U.S. officials attending a high-level national security forum last week say the technology is the next major threat to American elections and potentially to democracy itself, and analysts say the nefarious possibilities are virtually endless.
U.S. military researchers see deep fakes as a top priority, and lawmakers say cooperation among the armed forces, technology sector and Congress will be necessary to counter them.
We are heading to an era where deep fakes technology is going to cause real chaos, Sen. Ben Sasse, Nebraska Republican, told a room full of military, intelligence and national security officials Friday during the annual Texas National Security Forum.
Its going to destroy human lives, its going to roil financial markets, and it might well spur military conflicts around the world, said Mr. Sasse, echoing what military and intelligence officials say privately...

The libs used to like the Russians. Until they became a convenient excuse.
The 17th Amendment is what is killing the Republic
You misspelled 16th and/or 19th.
Their solution will be to only allow videos on the internet that come from the Washington Post, New York Times, etc.
There’s some kind of learning algorithm where one system creates fakes and a separate detection system tries to tell fakes from real videos. The fake-creating system improves until the detection system can’t tell them apart.
Entrenched bureaucrats in DC and cheaters in the DNC are far greater threats than Russia.
See the latest Tom Clancy novel.
I agree that this sounds more like an attempt to get out ahead of damaging revelations than any sort of real warning about nefarious Russian activity. The deep state are down to their last card, it would appear — rekindle the fires of anti-communism. There was a good reason for anti-communism but the place to apply that now is ironically with the deep state itself. I fear them a lot more than I fear Putin and his cyber farms.
And if all they are doing is recycling truth into easier to understand packages, then where’s the crime in that?
Enough, deep state, with your attempts to fool the general public, prepare to be forced to face the consequences for your past bad actions. This should be our prayer focus until it is answered.
This is utter insanity, the likes of which I have never seen or imagined in my lifetime.
Anyone believing this is stupid, an idiot or clinically insane.
These Russians are pathetic. So involved with trying to bring down the USA that their country remains a Mexico with nukes.
The simple solution is to just tell the public that the technology exists to produce high-quality fake audio and video. And that people should not always believe what they see and hear.
That's the simple solution. That's the non Big Government, common sense solution. That's not the solution Big Government will come up with
Beware. They will continue to erode our freedoms.
Hmmmm
If Ben’s Asse says we should be afraid of something, it means we should be afraid of what Ben’s Asse wants to do to stop it.
The biggest threat to democracy is the universal franchise.
We are not going to survive it.
Maybe Democrats and Republicans need to come together to form a “truth” site. The news media used to be trusted to give the impartial truth, but not anymore. I see lies by many politicians, but people excuse it and say “but did he really say that?” or I don’t believe anything I hear on (name a TV channel) or read in (name a newspaper.) What if people from both ends of the political spectrum jointly announced that something was or was not true. (Like the fake images described in this article.)
The 19th isn’t helping things, either.
