Two Texas officials are calling on Tarrant County Republicans to defeat an effort by some in their party to remove a Muslim from local GOP leadership.
At issue is a controversial effort that began months ago when a small group of local Republicans began pushing to remove Shahid Shafi, a Muslim, from the post of vice chairman.
Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush, who lived in Fort Worth before being elected to statewide office, was the first to weigh in on Friday.
I urge the Tarrant County GOP to stop this attempt to remove a hardworking county party official based on religious beliefs, Bush tweeted. We must move towards a more inclusive Republican Party and stop tearing down our own if we are to keep Texas red.
Texas House Speaker Joe Straus also posted a message on social media about the situation that has gained increased media attention.
Some in the Tarrant County Republican Party want to remove a party officer because of his religious faith, he wrote. This effort is disgraceful and un-American, and Republicans in Tarrant County should defeat it handily.
Those behind the move to oust Shafi, a surgeon and Southlake City Council member, say this is not about religion but whether Shafi is loyal to Islam and Islamic law or connected to Islamic terror groups.
The Star-Telegram reported earlier this week that the effort to remove Shafi has expanded and others now targeted include the party chair, Darl Easton; a precinct chair and area leader, Kelly Canon; and a precinct chair who is married to a Muslim, Lisa Grimaldi Abdulkareem.

Bush League Republicans want us to submit to Islam.
That’s why the past Governors invited so many of them to Texas.
Texastan?
Islam is antithetical to the Constitution.
Muslims cannot sincerely in good conscience take the oath of citizenship.
It’s against their religion.
Conveniently their religion allows them to lie to infidels.
The United States Constitution and the Koran are mutually exclusive.
Natch.
God bless these good Texans, and damn that Bush family of low-life traitors.
Our resident Boosh, right on cue.
Texas GOP.
Spit.
Dr. Shafi is a practicing, Mosque-attending muslim who claims not to follow sharia law or know what it is, activist Sara Legvold wrote on the Protect Texas Facebook page”
Camel jockeys have been flooding into Texas.
moohammedumism is anti=reality and repugnant to reason
A Bush and Strauss want something... therefore I am against it. The only thing needed now for the hat trick is for John Cornholio to weigh in.
I am SICK of RINOs, especially Texas RINOs - geez, if you can’t have actual conservatives in Texas, we are done.
I bet that there is a lot more going on here than reported in this article.
If Straus is for it then I have no choice but to be against it.
Get him out. Once the camel gets his nose under the tent, the rest will follow.
Hah, GMTA
TX GOP
SC GOP
VA GOP
It doesn’t matter the state.
Most of the states GOP are still run by Bush League Republicans.
If we keep voting for people who keep telling US they want to abandon the rule of law and give the country away, they will.
“Dr. Shafi is a practicing, Mosque-attending muslim who claims not to follow sharia law or know what it is,
How can he not know what Sharia is if he is Muslim.
If he’s a Muslim and doesn’t know what Sharia is, how does he know he’s not following it? Maybe he is despite not knowing the term.
I don’t think being Muslim disqualifies someone from having a position in the Republican party, although many Freepers disagree.
Muslims can lie to infidels if necessary to achieve the Islamic goals... and their goals is the long range takeover of the US
In a small sense opposition to Islam is anti-American. People did come here fleeing from Religious oppression, however; Islam is inherently intolerant and opposing it should very much become an American value.
Liar.
Taqiyya.
