If these were really legitimate asylum-seekers fleeing violence or terror, they'd have settled in safer areas of Mexico than Tijuana instead of trekking north to the US border.

The reality is that these people are looking for jobs and government welfare, not asylum. That's why the promise of jobs in Tijuana puts a smile on the face of the man at the end of the story.

Of course, without a border wall they will cross over illegally into the US as soon as the publicity and the border presence by ICE wind down.

Mexico is the most natural place for them to migrate to. Familiar language, familiar culture, familiar people and more economic opportunities than in their own countries. But as they are already learning, even Mexican welcome will have its limit.
