The trio had gone together to a party in Ensenada on Friday and were supposed to return that same night.4
A Tijuana police detective told Gomezs family that the three teens were tortured before they were shot Sunday, Garcia said.
There was no initial indication of what might have led to the brutal killings.
According to Tijuana media reports, gunfire erupted around 5 a.m. Sunday at the Lomas Verdes housing complex in south-central Tijuana. When police arrived, they found three young men dressed only in their underwear lying dead in front of an apartment door.
An initial investigation suggested a group of armed men had forcibly moved the three teens at gunpoint, made them kneel and shot them each in the head, according to Tijuana news site Punto Norte.
Gomez was born and raised in San Diego and was not well-traveled, his cousin said, adding that hed been to Mexico only once before, when their families traveled together in 2016 to visit other family members in Morelia, the capital of the central state of Michoacan.
According to his family, Gomez had headed out Friday with Suarez-Ojeda, who was dating Gomezs sister. Joined by the Tijuana teen, the trio apparently made it to the barbecue in Ensenada, according to those who were there. But the San Diego teens did not make it back to the U.S. that night as expected.
The Tijuana teen reportedly called his mother early Saturday and told her they were safe but had lost their cellphones, Garcia said. That was the last anyone heard from the group.
Family members contacted Baja California authorities and frantically searched for the missing teenagers over the weekend, Garcia said. On Sunday night, Tijuana police told them about the three bodies found outside the Lomas Verdes apartment.

Being in TJ probably had a lot to do with it.
Sorry, you can’t own a Firearm in Mexico unless the Government approves.
Couldn’t have happened unless the Police did it.
We may NEVER know why this happened.(/S)
Is it the illegals there?
Exactly why - probably not.
In general terms, not hard to guess.
Nothing good happens in Tijuana, because, as someone famous implied, its a third world s***hole.
It sounds from the call, like they were kidnapped and were told to call relatives to pay ransom for their release. But they only called to say they were ok. Afterwards they were killed. In Mexico the US tourism board suggests you pay the ransom.
Could they not come back across the border because it was closed?
Hey, lets go to Mexico! Not in this lifetime.
My prayers for the families of these boys.
That said, most people know how dangerous that town has always been if you plan to party.
My guess is this had something to do with buying drugs or sex.
Off Topic: Gomez sort of looks like a younger relative of the infamous, now late NFL player, Aaron Hernandez.
Both lives ended in tragedy.
Both of our kids went to college in San Diego. We told them that if they ever went to Mexico and something happened, do not call us. There is nothing we can or will do to get you out. Nothing.
And they believed us.They never went to Mexico.
i would guess “bad guys” have guns since they don’t tend to follow the law. though I suppose it could have been police as you mention.
Ensenada is 85 or so miles from san diego. Long way to go for a party....but possible dual reason for goin to mexico..
..drug runners skimming off the top? Execution style for not getting a ransom demand? Betcha other pertinent info not revealed yet
..sometin’ doesnt quite fit....
“Could they not come back across the border because it was closed?”
for five hours? not to mention only one of the TJ ports was closed for the five hours AND it was closed two days AFTER they were supposed to be back ...
I don’t see why you are blaming the victim here. Ensenada is a popular tourist spot, and yes, bad things happen to people traveling down that stretch of road.
Gangs and/or criminals.
I went there in 1979. I thought is was a complete schitthole then.
