Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) on Wednesday called on President Trump to sit down for an in-person interview with special counsel Robert Mueller and his team, saying that the president's written statements to the special counsel's office were insufficient.
Schiff, who sits on the House Intelligence Committee, said Mueller needed the opportunity to ask follow-up questions based on the president's responses.
“There really needs to be a live interview with the president because you need to be able to ask follow-up questions in real time," Schiff told CNN on Wednesday.
Schiff also said the committee, under new Democratic leadership next year, would pursue phone records related to the setup of June 2016 Trump Tower meeting between Trump campaign associates and a Russian lawyer who had promised dirt on then-Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
"In terms of whether [the president] was aware of the meeting at Trump Tower, there is important, relevant information that we were not allowed to get [previously]," Schiff told CNN.
"One of the key documents, for example, that we are going to pursue are the phone records that would show who was on that call [Donald Trump Jr.] had sandwiched between those calls to set up the meeting at Trump Tower," he added.

Congress cannot compel the President to testify. On any subject. Period.
I believe his acting director of DOJ will end it. And convey appropriate message to Mueller what the consequences are, without actually stating it.
In old fashioned Hoover FBI form. Call him to meeting. Tell him what he should do. Then lay the actual folder right in front of his eyes.

I am not one of those who thinks he is smarter than President Trump.
So no advice.
But I do wish he would lower the boom on the pond scum in DC.
Release all FICA warrants and any documents relating to them.
Appoint a special prosecutor to examine Mueller’s history in the legal profession. All of it.
Investigate and determine the reasons for Mueller finding tax returns of various supporters of President Trump more important than the tax returns of the Clinton’s, Biden’s, et al.
As well as why a normal expected exchange with the Russians is more important to Mueller than the graft and corruption involved in the Clinton’s dealings with Russia, Saudi Arabia and a host of others.
And why Mueller is not interested in the collusion between the Clinton’s, the CIA, the FBI and the British in the attempt to bring down our duly elected President Trump.
Eventually ll of this will become public information, but it will take years unless it is forced by a special investigator....and that will be too late.
I suspect he does know.
Mueller is part of the plot.
Yes, they think they are totally back in power. But President Trump is still in control of the Executive Branch.
And the data in place on the ComDem plot must be huge after 2 years of this nonsense.
Exposure is a very potent weapon.
