Hockey pucks: They're small, heavy and one Michigan college thinks might be the perfect weapon against an active shooter on campus.
Oakland University, a public school located in Rochester Hills, near Detroit, is distributing thousands of 94-cent hockey pucks for just that reason.
The distribution, which began earlier this month, stemmed from a March faculty active-shooter training session following February's shooting at a Parkland, Fla., high school that left 17 dead.
A participant at the training asked the Oakland University Police Chief Mark Gordon what items people could use to defend themselves on the campus, which has a no-weapons policy, the Detroit Free Press reports.
A hockey puck was a "spur-of-the-moment idea that seemed to have some merit to it and it kind of caught on," Gordon said.
The faculty union followed up on the idea, purchasing 2,500 hockey pucks: 800 for union members and 1,700 for students, the Free Press reports. (snip) -- "If you threw [a hockey puck] at a gunman it would probably cause some injury. It would be a distraction, if nothing else," Gordon told WXYZ, a local ABC station. The police chief also suggested a group of students could "rush" an active shooter with their pucks, creating a distraction that would allow someone else to get their hands on the shooter's weapon.

Cue balls are white aren’t they?
That would be seen as some kind of racist thing. No cue balls.
8 balls are ok. Maybe.
But but but the school has a no-weapons policy.
How can there be an active shooter?

If a shooter shows up, everyone will take out the pucks and tell the shooter to...wait for it...get the puck out of here.
Thank you.
One of the funniest movies ever made.
Certainly the funniest sports movie of all time.
An upgrade from the concept of keeping a bucket of rocks in the classroom? I think not. The best defense against a bad man with a gun is a good man with a gun.
The thinking in this article is what we get when we put liberals in charge of our education and the protection of our children.
No normal person wants to use their deadly skills. Good things to know though in these times. This is not the Ozzie and Harriet 50s, unfortunately. Sad really
Yeah, just glue them to a piece of polycarbonate panel for a shield. Or drill them all to sew into a medieval type of armor.
Personally i would get whats called a Cheetah air tank and have an air compressor available, i use this portable air tank with its valve and large outlet pipe to seat the bead on truck tires, very easy to remove the threaded outlet pipe and replace with plumping parts like a bell and a pipe that you can put several pucks in.
You have a wicked air cannon, i have had tons of fun with one and with just tennis balls.
Or better yet billiard balls connected with chain.

Yes .... see # 4.
Right on.

That's pretty true.
A classroom full of hockey puck throwers is never going to be confused with a Marine battalion in full combat kit.But prospectively, at least, it is different from a classroom of people in class but dressed for gym and having absolutely nothing at hand as a weapon. Always assuming that the class in question contains a goodly number of people who might actually be able to throw them with effect.
. . . which raises the issue of prestige related to being best suited to deter such an attack. When that consideration sinks in, the administrators will presumably want to take the hockey pucks back from the boys . . .
Not bad if many are thrown hard enough and hit in the head in quick succession, otherwise it will have little effect. Unless of course the gunman is wussy kid, which probably would be the case.
Don’t know how many times I’ve been hit in the chest, arm, ankle, etc.. with a slap shot. Hurts briefly, but nothing to lose your concentration or determination. And that’s just hockey. I’m pretty sure there is a lot more adrenaline running through an active shooter than a hockey game.
IMO
Agreed. This is at best a delaying tactic to buy a few seconds. It assumes that at least a dozen or two people have their picks with them, are within throwing range of the shooter, are able to dig their pucks out of backpacks or purses whatever in time, are able to hurl said puck with sufficient force to matter, are additionally able to throw accurately under extreme stress. For all those ifs, you disrupt the shooter for a couple of seconds, while drawing attention to yourselves. Not the best plan, unless... those couple of seconds where the shooter is defensive and distracted, trying to figure out what is hitting him/her, from where, how much of a threat is it... during those crucial moments some one or more people are going to have to rush the shooter and try to disable and or disarm him or her. A lot of its, a lot of people having to make the correct assessments and decisions in a second or to, and act in a coordinated manner. In other words, not terribly likely to help. Now, if even just 10% of the local population was armed...it only takes one person to end it quickly and decisively. Of course, for some inexplicable reason:-/ leftists want law abiding citizens disarmed. I wonder why they fear armed freedom loving patriots? :-/
Never bring a hockey puck to a gun fight.
lol ........ I think.

Harriet takes aim.
Most studies show throwing small projectiles (9-11mm) from the appropriate launcher is most effective. Why dont the hold shooting and ccw classes and drop stupid laws about carrying on campus instead? Would do much more than this feel good window dressing
Can be worn on a breakaway necklace. Takes a little practice though
__________
That makes too much sense.
