Germany, a country of 82 million, welcomed from 800,000 to over one million migrants and unvetted refugees in 2015.
Mrs Merkel, who last month announced she was controversially stepping down as leader of her party but not as Chancellor of Germany despite previously saying the two roles go hand in glove, said ceding power to a superstate is a better form of patriotism.
She told the event, titled Parliamentarianism Between Globalisation and National Sovereignty: In this day nation states must today should today, I say be ready to give up sovereignty.
But of course in an orderly procedure.
Mrs Merkel said that countries who think they can solve everything on their own are simply nationalistic and not patriotic because they only think about themselves.
She said: Either you are one of those who believe they can solve everything on their own and only have to think about themselves. That is nationalism in its purest form.
This is not patriotism. Because patriotism is if you include others in the German interest and accept win-win situations.

Great synopsis. Thank you.
...with a porcupine? (Quills first, of course.)
My dad is good friends with a German. A few months ago he asked him how Germany was doing and he said it’s gone. Past the point of no return. He said what the media tells you is completely watered down to how bad it really is, that he can’t even allow his 17 year old daughter to go out by herself, even in the daytime to say a local market because the risk for rape is so high. Anyone reading this who has connections to Germany, can you confirm that? I wouldn’t doubt if it’s true.
Isn’t that also what Hitler wanted? Poland, France, Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, England, and so forth, to give up sovereignty?
In this day and age, any German female, of any age, must be ready to give up her personal sovereignty. They cant just be selfish and think only about themselves, but must be ready to accommodate the needs of the men theyre inviting into their ... um ... country.
So can Merkel explain how this outrageous comment is any different than hers?
According to Lord Pharaoah Omoemba, wouldn't that be Austrian?
The DDR is still strong in this one.
I actually cant believe she said that out loud.
Hmmm... who should we put in charge of Germany then? I know! Iran! Give all control of Germany to Iran.
All your sovereignty belongs to us
this kind of “stuff” from the leaders of the EU makes me so angry I can hardly see straight. I can only imagine what is like to live in Europe now. Minnesota is going the EU way and so are other areas. My daughter doesn’t like the way the Somali’s have taken over...why is we don’t do that? Why can’t we defend ourselves without the horror of automatically being considered Killers and mass murderers?
Europe in time of the Crusades must have had many people feeling like or similar to the way I feel. Spain and Italy didn’t capitulate...I really must go back and read about the period of time in history. Hhow did they overcome the Islamic hordes?
He certainly had no problem with invading other countries, and getting them to give up their sovereignty.
They’ve never been even supposedly free societies in the way that ours is deep down, they have no history of it. It’s why we’re having such trouble now — too many of them here (meaning too man of those with no cultural history of freedom).
The slave does not dream of becoming free. He dreams of becoming the MASTER!
Merkel is pretty close to displacing Hitler as Germanys worst chancellor.
Unbelievable.
The pendulum will swing the other way one day and then watch out.
She told the event, titled Parliamentarianism Between Globalisation and National Sovereignty: In this day nation states must today should today, I say be ready to give up sovereignty.
Many leaders read The Prince to get their ideas of political power. Frau Merkel must have read The Giving Tree and is aiming for when Germany is just a stump for other countries to sit on and rest.
Germans, you are betrayed. Do what you must. Take your several authority. Each of you is responsible for the behavior of those you elected, and each of you must now take part in their disposition.
didn’t the Germans already try this back during the middle of the 20th century?
When she demands that China surrender its sovereignty to her and the UN, then I will believe she is sincere.
Except Germany when they buy most of their energy from Russia, in effect, negating NATO.
