When The ‘Good Guy With A Gun’ Is A Black Man
The American Conservative ^ | 11-17-2018 | W. James Antle III

Jemel Roberson was a good guy with a gun. The 26-year-old security guard at Manny’s Blue Room Lounge took up arms to defend patrons from a would-be shooter, just days after a dozen people were murdered by a gunman who had opened fire in a California bar.

A group of intoxicated men had earlier been ejected from Manny’s bar, according to local news reports. One then came back with a gun and started shooting. Roberson returned fire and was ultimately able to disarm and detain the shooter after putting his knee on the assailant’s back.

Sounds like a Second Amendment success story, the kind we are routinely told are a virtual impossibility in the wake of any mass shooting incident, as the efficacy of gun control is highlighted and “thoughts and prayers” are declared to be futile.

Except for what happened next: the police arrived and shot and killed Roberson. The suspect lives. The young black man who may have prevented the next mass shooting is dead. His nine-month-old baby now has no father.

I can’t excuse this one, as he was uniformed and clearly identifiable as a security guard. I realize that anybody could still be a gun man, including a security guard, but somebody clearly uniformed should have given the police a reason to give more time to ascertain his identity.

The assumption is this happened because he was black. We don’t know...……………….

AAH; another highly trained professional with a badge and a gun arrives to save the day (for the bad guys).
Obviously NOT SARCASM, I have seen our boys in blue shoot down here.
The CORPS would have sent them back to boot camp, in the stupid platoon.

Are you sure he was uniformed? I was under the impression he was in plain clothes as some bystanders said they yelled at the responding crew that he was security.

Tragic, regardless. As a retired LEO, it’s incidents like these that give all of us a bad name.

I read it, and the patrons were also screaming to the cops that he was security.

Roberson reportedly wanted to be a Chicago police officer, the true path of a good guy with a gun. A local minister put it this way in an interview with WGN9: “He was getting ready to train and do all that stuff, so the very people he wanted to be family with, took his life.”

Split second decision making is always hard. The wait could cost lives of innocent people, or they could, like in this case, take the life of the good guy with a gun. I didn't see anything in this article that said he was dressed in a security guard uniform, or any type of uniform. It did say people were yelling security guard, but that could have only added to the police reacting badly. Because the police may have misunderstood what they were yelling. Walking into confusion creates confusion, especially with people yelling. Thus making that split second decision becomes even more cloudy. I am not making excuses, I am saying that I would never want the thankless job of being a police officer. They can do it right for years, and make a bad split second judgement call and get it horribly wrong. The same things happen in war too. It's called the fog of war. War is happening in our streets, as well as, in other countries.

Having the luxury of hindsight makes our indignation seen justified, but is it really?

Is there a difference in legal consequences between such a situation involving law enforcement versus military?

If you’re military, you do time in Leavenworth.

If you’re civil law enforcement, with a few exceptions, you get paid time off during the “investigation”, then you’re back to work.

I think I read yesterday that he was in uniform.

It’s a percentage Sir. There is always a very small percentage of rotten pickles in every barrel. As more barrels of pickles are needed the percentage stays the same, but the rotten pickles increase in number. Profession aside, this happens with all groups when they increase in population.

Depends on the rules of engagement for military. So in some cases no, some yes.

I moved back to Chicago a few years ago. I’m an actor, but help one of me best friends who’s a private detective. I was suppose to serve the owner of this bar in Robbins, IL that night. Since I don’t have a gun I told my friend I don’t go to Robbins, when the sun goes down. So we use a Chicago P.D. detective who’s black for these jobs. So the Chicago P.D. detective who went there, called me the next day and told me about this shooting. So sad. Prayers for Jemel Roberson, rest in peace, and prayers for his family and loved ones..

Exactly.

The author is assuming racism with no evidence.

Do we even know the race of the cop?

In the Castille case all we have is the dashcam video where the officer repeatedly tells Castille "Don't take it out" before the shooting.

I blame the shooting on the fact that Castille had just smoked a blunt with the baby mama and was too high to follow directions.

What transpired is really sad, tragic actually. The Illinois State Police came out with a statement regarding preliminary findings and asking for more witness statements. They reported that Jemel did NOT have a security guard uniform. The Midlothian policeman REPEATEDLY told Jemel to drop the gun he had pointed at another person (turns out was the bad guy}. Person(s) yelled to the Midlothian policeman that he was the security guard. Is it possible the Midlo policeman didn’t know or hear as to who was the security guard? Could the guy on the ground with a gun pointed at him be the security guard and the bad guy had a gun? And then the policeman did what he was trained to do?

I live in Midlothian. Yes, he is a white, 7 year veteran. He has been put on administrative leave.

My assumption is that Chicago has such stringent Gun Control that the police are lead to believe that anyone with a gun is a criminal suspect. It's the easiest way to dumb down officers of the law.

The allegation that the security guard was clearly warned by clearly identifiable police had better not be a lie.

They usually put that in the title in those cases.

Best to put your gun away when the cops arrive.

'Course he may not have known the cops got there and the bad guy may have been fighting him.

Tragic.

Sadly, the msm and groups like blm will use this incident to ramp up violence against Whitey and the police.

Kind of hard to put down a gun when you are on top of a suspect- you’re thinking of the perp squirming his way out of your grip - thinking to put the gun down would be to put it within the suspect’s reach.

Just sad all around.
