Well this happened to some my ancestors of mine...this was also said of them...
They were Americans born of Americans and had American grandparents and great grandparents in some cases...
They were all NATIONALISTS, loved America...their ancestors had died fighting for America...American heroes with the monuments to prove it...and some people who were later known as ‘patriots” declared them to be ‘treasonous’ and killed them, confiscated their American soil property and drove them off...sometimes right out of the country...
Today those ancestors of mine are called Loyalists...but in 1775-1783 they were NATIONALISTS...and despised...by ‘patriots’
Now don’t get stupid just because I am making sense....
Just think about it...
The children and grandchildren of those early Americans wandered back home...just as I did...
Still as NATIONALIST as can be...taught by my father who never saw this ancient home land but he was also in love with America...
