THOUSAND OAKS, California Six off-duty police officers were inside the Borderline Bar & Grill on Wednesday night when a gunman opened fire on those present.
Twelve people were killed as the gunman, who has been identified as David Ian Long, attacked the bar using a smoke device and a .45-caliber handgun. Many of those present were young people, on hand for college night.
Captain Garo Kuredjian, Media Relations Officer for the Ventura County Police Department, told Breitbart News on the scene that there had been three officers from the Oxnard Police Department and three from the Los Angeles Police Department inside the Borderline, all off duty.
They were likely unarmed, he said, though he could not yet confirm that information, nor could he yet say if and how they had assisted victims or confronted the gunman.
Typically, if you go to a bar, if youre going to be drinking, you would leave your gun at home, Kuredjian said.

A few years back, when I lived in the once-Golden State, my CCW had a printed provision (paraphrasing but close) "Not valid when consuming alcohol, or remaining in places that primarily serve alcohol."
Might have been a County restriction, I don't know if it was statewide.
.
Kids? In a bar?
That’s right. If you don’t pull it out and start waving it around, no one’s gonna know.
Same here and I retired after 30 years of service as an LEO.
You’re spot on.
Six LEO’s and not one weapon. WTH is in California’s water?
.
>> “They were likely unarmed...” <<
This is trully sad!
They should all be terminated.
Sad commentary on the state of affairs today..
I offer my condolences to those senselessly murdered in this and far too many incidents.
But.. We all know ‘Gun Free Zone’ is the way to go, Right?
What can one expect when policies that make no sense exist and are in effect?
What indeed.
6 off duty officers of the law present? Wow.
But..
Prohibited from carrying a weapon other than their martial arts training which is useless in almost every firearms related mass incident.
Prohibited by laws and local politicians and officials and agencies all the way to the top of the heap on Capitol Hill, who ironically have their own CCWs or bodyguards armed and deadly, from providing for the public safety of all.
.
Nonsense!
Under CA law, they are actually required to be armed at all times in public.
.
.
>> “I thought all cops off duty still carried.” <<
They do!
There is an aroma of bovine offal hanging in the air here presently.
“They do!”
Not if they are going to be drinking.
.
Ya know, it’s going to be real interesting to find what the back story is on the 6 off duty witnesses.
.
Keep your blinders on, the real world will scare you.
Democrat politicians lives are more important than ours.
Thats why theyve banned shall issue ccw in California.
If the bien-peasants die, its for the public good. Innocent kids died so liberals get to grandstand about the horrors of guns.
I apologize that my compare and contrast does not exactly conform to your comment. My bad.
It’s not just the politicians who are considered more important and deserve safety and protection more than regular citizen tax payers. It’s also the well connected wealthy and all celebrities as well. They’re considered much more important than you. They give them and their families full rights and full protection under the 2nd.
The government in CA tells regular citizen tax payers that if they’re threatened, to run, hide and crawl into a deep hole and hold your breath. And if that isn’t successful, too damn bad!
That’s California. In NY, there is no such requirement and that’s where I worked. In my opinion, that’s a terrible law. I sure wouldn’t want to be carrying if I know that I’m going to be drinking or at Disneyland etc.
.
Terrorists do frequent Disneyland!
.
Of course they do. But it’s not enjoyable carrying a weapon when one is riding a rollercoaster. Now you can take it and lock it in a locker every time you ride.
Problem solved!
