When someone called me a "banana" I responded that the term was "apple" and if they were going to insult me they should get the nomenclature right.

It was a way for them to disarm her and take the wind out of her sails without getting into a verbal battle.
I don't see it as ashamed of being white as much as *You idiot! You're such a racist you can't tell the difference between *white* and *hispanic* (or whatever you want to call tan skinned people who speak some form of Spanish.)
