It looks like a cross in rainbow colors, but in an abstract pattern so that it avoids a rainbow look (which must be purposeful).

You are correct. It’s just with this particular Pope, one never knows. It was he who happily accepted that Hammer & Sickle Cross “gift” from Bolivian President Evo Morales in July of 2015.

Terrible things have been reported about the Church, no doubt about it, and sometimes the pope makes seemingly ambiguous statements.
About the rainbow, though... Just reminiscing about the old days, before the word “rainbow” was co-opted.
