Anyone seeking a mid-career sabbatical should seek a presidential nomination to a position that requires Senate confirmation. GOP Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is teeing up more votes this week, and the GOP needs to move fast because the glacial pace of staffing the government will slow to near-zero if Democrats retake the Senate.
Mr. McConnell has filed cloture on three nominees, including two assistant attorneys general who have been in a rubber room for more than a year. President Trump nominated Jeffrey Bossert Clark to run the environment and natural resources division in June 2017. Ditto for Eric Dreiband for civil-rights. The third is an assistant Pentagon secretary who would oversee manpower and reserve affairs.
Democrats file cloture on every nominee, which kicks off 30 hours of debate even if no Senator is opposed. They figure if they cant defeat nominees they can delay and consume valuable time. Democrats have forced 117 cloture votesversus 12 in Barack Obamas first two years and four in George W. Bushs.

I have a theoretical question. Could the Republican majority skip ALL vacations (Thanksgiving and Christmas) and pass everything their heart desires and confirm conservatives to fill every court vacancy? That would be a very Biblical “Eye for an Eye” after what the dems put the Kavanaugh family and so many others whose lives and reputations suffered through what happened with the Kavanaugh hearings.
But, according to St Hillary, to disagree with an election result threatens “democracy “!!
President Trump and Leader McConnell should demand Senate remain in town until all pending nominations are confirmed. Maybe approve them via single and simple up/down voice vote on all of them? Clear the backlog, everyone can then go home, campaign, and say whatever they want.
My understanding is that the senate has to go into recess in December. This will be the first opportunity that Trump has had to make recess appointments because the turtle would not put the senate in recess. Now the turtle has no choice. I hope Trump has a plan to make the most of it.
Yep. Particularly with so many Democrats in Red States locked in tight election battles, the Turtle should not give the Senate ANY time off. Force the Democrats to choose between more obstructing or rolling over and letting the nominees sail through in exchange for being able to campaign to keep their jobs.
Theoretically, the mean of the Republican Partys caucus of 2014 and of 2016 is over 22 seats. The conclusion is that reversion to the mean would imply that the Republicans would win, not just the 8 seats it now defends in 2018 - and not just the 16 or so seats if they won half of the 2018 senate contests - but at least 22 seats.(note: when an announcer reports that a particular hitter is in a drought, he says Hes due. That is a prediction of reversion to the mean. )So in that rosy scenario, the Republicans would have enough senators to impeach anyone the House wanted to indict. They could wipe out the Ninth Circus! Not that they would, thered be too many RINOs for that to happen . . .
