Major Hurricane Michael Live Thread II
NHC/NOAA ^ | 9 October 2018 | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 10/09/2018 4:49:06 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Major Hurricane Michael is churning toward the northeastern Gulf of Mexico coast. Florida Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency Monday for 35 counties with mandatory coastal evacuations in the FL Panhandle. 1,250 National Guard troops are aiding the process and more than 4,000 more placed on standby.

FEMA is already on the ground in Florida; other federal agencies are also preparing to assist people in the storm's path.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey on Monday declared a state of emergency for the entire state. Georgia Governor Nathan Deal issued a state of emergency for 92 counties ahead of Hurricane Michael landfall.

Meanwhile, Tallahassee city government (Andrew Gillum, Mayor & D'Rat FL Gubernatorial candidate) offices are "closed until further notice." Tallahassee International Airport ‏is suspending commercial flight activity as 12:01 a.m. ET on Wednesday but expects to resume activity on Thursday.

The U.S. military moved its aircraft from the Panhandle on Monday. Roughly 50 F-22 stealth fighter jets — valued around $150 million each — have been relocated from the Tyndall Air Force Base, while the U.S. Navy said it is moving all its training aircraft from Pensacola.

Energy Production The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) on Tuesday estimated that around 726 MMcf/d (28.4%) of natural gas production and 670,831 b/d (39.5%) of oil production in the GOM had been shut in ahead of the storm.

As of midday Tuesday, 75 platforms and three rigs had been evacuated, while eight dynamically positioned rigs had been moved out of the storm’s path as a precaution, according to BSEE.

Latest report had the sustained wind at 155 (category 4)with gusts to 170, thus a few mph short of a category 5. I haven’t seen any TV shots around Panama City where the eye was strongest. We shall see just how bad it is in a few hours as the central news feeds are finally able to be sent out.

Was wondering the same. His feed sent chills up my spine. Hope he evacuated the car and left the feed on and is safe.

Is that you, Janet? What’s shakin’ in your neighborhood? Hope your peacocks are OK.

Where was Brett? I have his site up now and his name isn’t in the list. The only one from his bunch who’s streaming at the moment is Gary Schmidtt in Panama City.

He had to abandon his car and take shelter in a nearby home. The car had the camera going as it started to float away. His wife tweeted that he was safe.

Yikes! That happened while I slept (I sleep during the day) and I had no clue he was even down there. I should have known better because he’s always in the thick of things. That was more than he bargained for, I’d say.
Glad he was able to get out and to a safe place.

I had to work today so behind on most everything. This is a screen shot of landfall from WeatherBug. Note that Tyndall AFB is in the eye of storm.

The people whose house he had to break into had evacuated and were actually watching his feed as he pulled into their driveway.

4 1/2 hours after making landfall near Mexico Beach, Florida, as a near Category 5 hurricane with 150 MPH winds and pressure at 919 MB, Michael is a Category 3 hurricane ripping through Georgia with winds of 115 MPH and pressure at 940.

There are 'know it alls' out there (and here) trying to play down this storm. They are liars.

No, I have no contacts there. A FReeper posted earlier that all the aircraft had been moved to other bases.

Mexico Beach is probably going to take a while to recover. My daughter who has lived in Florida for almost 25 years swears by Sanibel as the best. I’ve never been there. Funny thing about Fla folks, they don’t go to beaches that much. They go to the “springs”...clearwater rivers in fla. She wants me to canoe with them there, but I am old fat woman and just what the gators want so think I will pass on that one...lol

I know it’s not a laughing matter but that did make me chuckle. I guess since they were watching him to monitor the situation, they aren’t mad at him for breaking in.

I would LOVE to be a storm chaser but I don’t know that I’d be brave enough to have gone to FL for this storm. I imagine everyone is stunned at what a monster it became.
