Major Hurricane Michael Live Thread II
NHC/NOAA ^ | 9 October 2018 | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 10/09/2018 4:49:06 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Major Hurricane Michael is churning toward the northeastern Gulf of Mexico coast. Florida Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency Monday for 35 counties with mandatory coastal evacuations in the FL Panhandle. 1,250 National Guard troops are aiding the process and more than 4,000 more placed on standby.

FEMA is already on the ground in Florida; other federal agencies are also preparing to assist people in the storm's path.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey on Monday declared a state of emergency for the entire state. Georgia Governor Nathan Deal issued a state of emergency for 92 counties ahead of Hurricane Michael landfall.

Meanwhile, Tallahassee city government (Andrew Gillum, Mayor & D'Rat FL Gubernatorial candidate) offices are "closed until further notice." Tallahassee International Airport ‏is suspending commercial flight activity as 12:01 a.m. ET on Wednesday but expects to resume activity on Thursday.

The U.S. military moved its aircraft from the Panhandle on Monday. Roughly 50 F-22 stealth fighter jets — valued around $150 million each — have been relocated from the Tyndall Air Force Base, while the U.S. Navy said it is moving all its training aircraft from Pensacola.

Energy Production The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) on Tuesday estimated that around 726 MMcf/d (28.4%) of natural gas production and 670,831 b/d (39.5%) of oil production in the GOM had been shut in ahead of the storm.

As of midday Tuesday, 75 platforms and three rigs had been evacuated, while eight dynamically positioned rigs had been moved out of the storm’s path as a precaution, according to BSEE.

The Weather Channel has been live in Panama City Beach all day, barely wind. Look further in the area at the PWS, I looked at dozens of PWS and not had more than winds in the 20s and 30s, gusts in the 30s and 40s. Follow up to the eye, there are lots of stations in the area, they are all reporting much the same. Look at the histories on each.

And yes, there are some with good placement, others with bad. I've had stations since about 2005. I also have air quality and radiation detectors. Always been interested in the weather and environment. And, yes, skeptical of reporting, especially when we can see and measure the disconnect. Also wonder at the conditioning that feeds media and government hype. Trust them, yeah, sure.

You expect us to believe there was only one PWS this morning in Panama City? Really?

OMG! Just saw Mexico Beach on CNN. It looks devasted! So sad...my favorite beach. Used to go to Panama City until it got taken over by drunken teenagers. Mexico Beach is for us elders...lol. Small town, not much to do except enjoy the beautiful beach there. Was planning on going late next spring. Hope and pray everyone is okay and they can rebuild.

That's good to know about Panama city. My wife and I had planned to take our anniversary there this week but the plan fell through. When we get a chance we'll have to shop around more. Mexico Beach you say?

We loved New Smyrna Beach this April!

That the eyewall can stay intact that far inland is something else. Bad news as the further from the coast the less likely that building are set up for hurricane winds.

We were to go to B’ham for a child’s b’day dinner and have put it off. Not just weather but traffic.

WFTV reporter just showed the Marina Civic Center in Panama city. He and his crew were in a vehicle and ran for a door to the center only to find the roof caved in and they ran with a homeless man to hide in a corner inside. Furniture was sliding back and forth after the big windows broke from the wind. He said the marina is “wiped out.”

Just imagine if that storm had hit a more densely populated area, like Pensacola, or Mobile.

I just talked to my wife who rode out the storm in Southport Florida which is in Bay county just north of Panama City. The house has entire wall blown out as well as windows. During the height of the storm she witnessed the roof coming up when her and my mother in law was in a closet. I believe we will see similar damage all around rt 231 heading north of Panama city. This is bad. I am at a loss for feelings Especially when I pleaded with them to evacuate.
