Major Hurricane Michael Live Thread II
NHC/NOAA ^ | 9 October 2018 | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 10/09/2018 4:49:06 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Major Hurricane Michael is churning toward the northeastern Gulf of Mexico coast. Florida Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency Monday for 35 counties with mandatory coastal evacuations in the FL Panhandle. 1,250 National Guard troops are aiding the process and more than 4,000 more placed on standby.

FEMA is already on the ground in Florida; other federal agencies are also preparing to assist people in the storm's path.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey on Monday declared a state of emergency for the entire state. Georgia Governor Nathan Deal issued a state of emergency for 92 counties ahead of Hurricane Michael landfall.

Meanwhile, Tallahassee city government (Andrew Gillum, Mayor & D'Rat FL Gubernatorial candidate) offices are "closed until further notice." Tallahassee International Airport ‏is suspending commercial flight activity as 12:01 a.m. ET on Wednesday but expects to resume activity on Thursday.

The U.S. military moved its aircraft from the Panhandle on Monday. Roughly 50 F-22 stealth fighter jets — valued around $150 million each — have been relocated from the Tyndall Air Force Base, while the U.S. Navy said it is moving all its training aircraft from Pensacola.

Energy Production The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) on Tuesday estimated that around 726 MMcf/d (28.4%) of natural gas production and 670,831 b/d (39.5%) of oil production in the GOM had been shut in ahead of the storm.

As of midday Tuesday, 75 platforms and three rigs had been evacuated, while eight dynamically positioned rigs had been moved out of the storm’s path as a precaution, according to BSEE.

Was listening to a ham operator a while ago. He was from there and got out in time.

If people had not evacuated there would be thousands of casualties.

When they return they will face wrecked homes, towns and businesses. It will be months or longer to return to normal

What the hell is wrong with you? Besides being a know it all.

My sister and church group volunteered after Katrina hit MS. She said it was absolute hell on earth. Prayers up for all.

They are saying third lowest pressure hurricane ever to make landfall on Weather Channel. They imply that should make it third worst ever, using words like "unprecedented" storm, etc. It sure doesn't look like an Andrew or Katrina impact wise to me though. Maybe it is worse than they have been able to show.

How many times has Panama City Beach been scraped and rebuilt? I think at least two times in my life. But PCB is going to dodge this storm it seems.

What’s the population of the area? Usually the permanent population of that part of Florida is less than the tourists that are there.

We like going to the Destin-area, they’re probably ok as they are further to the west.

Navarre is well west of Panama City. It is quite likely they didn’t even get hurricane force winds there. Plus being on the NW quadrant means water was pulling out, not piling in.

Saw an image on Twitter of a house completely ripped apart in Mexico Beach. Not just a roof blown off, but walls collapsed - EF-3/EF-4 level damage equivalent. But I’m sure that’s just hype.

I just saw a picture of the inside of the eye wall with blue sky above taken from inside Tyndall AFB. Never seen a picture like that.

Given the intensity and the speed, this storm will likely be a Category 2 heading into SW Georgia, possible not downgrading to TS status until it nears the South Carolina/GA border. Amazing.

The two counties getting the very worst -the NE eyewall - are lightly populated - I recall reading they had a combined population of around 30K. But a fair amount of people in FL and GA are going to get hit very hard. Recall the damage that Charley caused all the way inland to Orlando. And Michael is stronger than Charley. The weaker side of the storm is probably as strong as the worst of Harvey, and Harvey trashed Rockport.

Had a long-time boyfriend who’s dad was a “Hurricane Hunter”. I was always dumbfounded how they did that.
