Ronald Brownstein, a senior editor for The Atlantic and senior political analyst at CNN, recently issued a bleak tweet: “Today felt very much like an update of the 1850s: 2 very distinct parts of US that no longer care to even fake that they respect or value the other. Like Trump, #Kavanaugh built his strategy on rallying 1 side of that divide vs the other. Seams are unraveling-not just on #SCOTUS”
Slappy acknowledges there’s a national schism but says that she and her neighbors see Washington as divided, not their communities. James Butler, a local mayor and vice president of the local Rotary club, agrees.
Butler is a Republican, but he says his borough council is made up of elected Democrats and Republicans and he says partisanship is never a part of governing. “Everybody has their ideas of what they feel is best for the community, but at our level, it’s not really a Republican or a Democrat thing. It’s more what can we do to solve the problem.
“Our great division in this country doesn’t come from here, it comes from the political class.”
In the elite bubbles, it feels that politics is roiled by division. But in other parts of the country, where people are focused on local issues, many Americans still feel unified. Slappy and Butler epitomize this collective spirit. The elites in cities like DC and New York, says Slappy, “don’t seem to get that.”
Butler, for his part, isn’t sure what it will take to close this compassion gap.
“I just think it would be better for all of us if it did.”

She has been probably the only accurate reporter of the Trump win. Don’t dis her. If you read all her stuff she called the shots better than anyone.

They still fail to see that the American people had had enough of them all!.....including these rats! Nobody’s causing ‘division’....America is standing up to all and any who have been destroying this country from the inside...and to take it back! That’s not division that’s America rising!

IF we had an AG with any backbone, we would have people like George Soros, and the organizers of Atnifa, jailed for domestic terrorism. No surprise that former Nazi collaborator Soros is bank rolling groups to engage in standard fascist poltical tactics of street violence and intimidation. He just going back to what he learned in his childhood.
This is not “just politics” this is a organize policy of intimidation and violence. It need to be prosecuted. The rule of law DOES matter and needs to be upheld.
Salena Zito might be the only reporter who actually made it a mission to go out to “flyover country” and talked to workaday Americans about our views, and report fairly...
She’s consistently turns in some very solid reporting on Trump and events in general and appears to lean conservative in her views...Those inclined should read her stuff for a more accurate idea who she is...She’s nowhere near “feminazi” territory as far as I can see...
As for her looks/appearance, I missed that memo too...I was raised to know it is extremely ungentlemanly to comment either way about a woman’s looks (goes for everyone in general), good or otherwise, unless she is related and you are asked...
Ms. Zito has been publishing actual “go find out about stuff” journalism for many years. It never occurred to me to look for her picture, or any other writer’s.
I may be misremembering but I think it was Zito who made the spot-on observation that Trump’s supporters take him seriously but not literally while his critics take him literally but not seriously.
