I don't remember polls from that time, but I'm from that community, and can tell you that there's never been much love lost on Clarence Thomas there.
He isn't celebrated among blacks because he's got the wrong politics.
He was attacked during his confirmation hearing because he's a conservative - not because he's black. Remember who was doing the attacking. It wasn't our side. Most blacks are liberals, and were happy to watch him burn at the stake.
There’s been a perpetual drumbeat in the press, and I assume more so in the black press, to portray Anita Hill as a victim and Thomas as a brute.
Thirty years ago the lies hadn’t yet marinated in the public consciousness. I’m a white guy with roots back to the Mayflower (literally) and New Amsterdam. For whatever reason, I found the persona of Clarence Thomas far more compelling than Kavanaugh. Thomas got where he was by hard work and intellectual honesty. Kavanaugh was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. This is not a knock on Kavanaugh, and I was truly appalled and angry at his treatment, but never took to him personally. I really like Thomas as person and feel blessed that he is on the court.
