A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck near Haiti on Saturday night, according to the US Geological Survey.
There was damage in the northern sections of the country, President Jovenel Moïse tweeted.

The USGS said the center of the quake was about 11 miles northwest of the city of Port-de-Paix. It was only 7.2 miles deep.
In January 2010, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake killed an estimated 220,000 to 300,000 people in Haiti. Tens of thousands of people are still displaced as a result of the quake.

The only time Haiti ever had a government worth its salt was when it was briefly ruled by the US military. They about drove the Haitians nuts because they would not be corrupt, required fair value for a fair price, had strong and effective laws that were enforced, and did much to rebuild what they could.
The overall result, however, was much like sweeping ants into a pile.
That was my first thought.

There is and has been a good bit of volcanic activity in the Caribbean, most recently on Monserrat, but Guadeloupe blew its stack about 170 years ago. But as you know, mere volcanism, pffft! ;^)
