Collins speech was a brilliant team play by the GOP and Mitch McConnell. She was chosen to give the speech and as a team player she did. It cold cocked the left and by dragging out her answer for 45 minutes it made everyone listen.
You may be right. We also don't know Collins' role in the Murkowski-Flake discussions. Collins may have been key to keeping Flake on board. This was one of those tight corners where personal relationships among the Senators themselves are often decisive. It's almost impossible from the outside to know what really happened.
Collins' speech was not written at the last minute.
I do agree with the Great One about this:
‘Her speech painted Bret Kavanaugh as a bit of an activist.’
Yeah. I hope Trump knows what he’s doing, for that and another reason.
But here is where Levin is wrong.
I tried to tell people many times in this forum that Collins ROCKED during the Thompson hearing on Chinagate. No senator there did better work or invested more time [although Larry Nickles could have. His brief participation was even more intense.]
Susan Collins thirsts for righteousness. She is a lady-knight.
Flawed in her beliefs, but I don’t want to see her replaced by another Feinstein.
I love you Sudan collins
Well played Ms Collins.
Exactly this and more. It was high drama. She was the deciding vote and tens of millions were watching. Not just Republicans on FOX, but all the major network and cable channels as well as radio. Her speech was a masterful dissection and repudiation of every single argument the left made. As a woman, and possibly the most liberal Republican in the Senate, she was the perfect person to give this speech. People were drawn into the trap by her "big announcement" and forced to hear their entire view of the controversy destroyed.
I DO NOT LIKE Susan Collins. She is a RINO and has stabbed conservatives in the back many times. But, she is the best we are going to get out of Maine. For what she did on Friday, I thank her.

Totally agree.
The staging, timing and total orchestration was brilliant! Usually the dems are the ones pulling off successful events like that.
And her speech, given the context i.e. screeching woman roaming the capitol in high pitched hysteria, gave a wonderful alternative sight for the millions of women who tuned in:
That’s what an intelligent, independent woman looks like. And it’s what a Senator of any gender, looks like. A great example to our daughters.
It was very epic. She not only saved the nominee, she saved the reputation of the Senate.
