It’s because we know pets are helpless (in a way) and depend on us for everything (meaning they’re not wild animals), and if they’re sick or dying, they don’t understand or know what to do or what’s happening. In many ways that makes it sadder when you have to say goodbye.

Exactly. I often feel much more sadness at the idea of an animal or child feeling pain than when I hear of adults feeling so. I guess we assume that adults have at least some coping power, but animals and little kids are helpless in that respect.

^ this + 1 I consider myself a tough guy, I’ve faced a lot in my time. Nothing breaks me down more than a loss of a pet.
