Ranking of top media referrals shows portside bias
WASHINGTON A survey of the percentages of search traffic received by 36 U.S. news sites, including many of the biggest, provides stark evidence that Google, representing nearly 90 percent of the market share of U.S. searches, is playing ideological favorites with those leaning left and most antagonistic to President Trump and the Republican Party near the last stretch of the 2018 mid-term elections that could change the balance of power in Congress.
The survey conducted by WND Sept. 22, 2018, using data from Alexa.com, shows no alternative, independent or right-of-center press making the top 15 preferred by Googles algorithms. The data collected on each include two percentages the first, the total percentage of the sites overall traffic coming from search engines and the second, the percentage of traffic each site gets directly from Google as an immediate, direct upstream referral.
The survey includes nearly all the top news sites and most of the larger alternative, independent and right-of-center press. None of the latter made the top 15 new sites preferred by Google, a virtual monopoly, along with Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, MSN and all others accounting for less than 16 percent combined.
The 15 most favored sites by search include the Houston Chronicle’s Chron.com with 65.8 percent of its overall traffic coming from search engines and 37.9 percent coming directly from Google, USNews.com (63.3/48.3), Time.com (49.1/33.9), the San Francisco Chronicle’s SFGate.com (43.9/36.4), CBSNews.com (35.0/36.6), USAToday.com (34.9/38.8), LATimes.com (34.1/36.7), Newsweek.com (34.0/34.8), CNBC.com (31.8/31.7), Bloomberg (30.2/24.3), HuffintgonPost.com (28.2/32.2), TheAtlantic.com (28/27.6), ABCNews.go.com (27.9/31.4), NewYorkTimes.com (23.9/28.4) and Reuters (23.9/20.1). Reuters is the only non-U.S-based news organization on the list, but it is the largest English-language online wire service.

To anyone who still uses Google:
Will you please wake the Hell up?
I just googled “George Soros Organizations”
The first hit was a Snopes (itself a joke) article claiming Soros was NOT a Nazi and its all a vast right-wing conspiracy.
Say goodbye to Google , it’s easy
DuckduckGo is just about as good , don’t miss Google,
given what we now know , at all.
Sayonara Google !
I haven’t used Google since early in the GW Bush administration.
I need to try that. I tried to look up gang violence statistics on google. It came back “Gun violence”. Tried rewording a couple of times - always came back with guns rather than gangs!
Gargoyle = Dark Tech
All that this indicates is that these sites rely very heavily on search to get readers.
It says absolutely nothing, at all, about bias.
AND add a Brave browser.
I just did a comparisson search of “Kavanugh” in Google and Duck Duck Go.
For the most part they were fairly similar, with USA Today, CNN, and NPR showing up. However, DuckDuckGo had some results from FoxNews near the top, and Google did not.
DuckDuckGo is not the end-all-be-all solution
“The first hit was a Snopes (itself a joke) article claiming Soros was NOT a Nazi and its all a vast right-wing conspiracy.”
That’s twice today I’ve seen that lie. Looks like they want to create circumstances in which they can brand anyone who calls Soros a Nazi can be destroyed as a wild-eyed conspiracy theorist.
Just like people who used to claim media bias back in 1980.
That was easy !
Thanks , never heard of it
“DuckDuckGo is not the end-all-be-all solution”
It’s not perfect, but will that stop you from switching from horrible to better?
Sorry for the gibberish in my previous note. Hope you can puzzle out the gist.
If you are holding an Android phone, you’re “using Google”.
I’ve been using duckduckgo for over a year now. I like their privacy promise as well as knowing I’m not getting content directly back from google into my browser, even if duckduckgo’s results are based on google. But this is just a bandaid and not a cure. As long as google is the sole proprietor of the gates to information, we’ve got problems. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
“If you are holding an Android phone, youre using Google.”
You’re using an OS they invented, but you don’t have to be hooked up to them, and that’s not the same as using their search engine on line.
