Let me throw out an alternative reason for delaying the vote in the committee.
The primary is to tarnish Kavanaugh so bad that even if finally confirmed he is damaged,but the secondary reason is to slow down the confirmation of the other court nominees that are scheduled for votes on Monday, 24 Sept.
Grassley should still hold those votes whether or nor Ford appears.
I expect the Dems will demand that all of these other court nominations be held up and maybe hold additional hearings on all of them since it’s possible that there is something not yet uncovered in their backgrounds also.
