Over 2,500 medical students and healthcare professionals at over 30 leading medical centers held events on Monday urging the public to treat "gun violence" as a public health crisis, The Mercury News reported.
The events were part of Scrubs Addressing the Firearms Epidemic (SAFE), a non-partisan action co-founded by Stanford’s Professor of Medicine Dr. Dean Winslow, a Republican, and fourth year medical student Sarabeth Spitzer, a Democrat. Winslow is a retired U.S. Air Force colonel and flight surgeon who was deployed six times to Iraq and Afghanistan.
At Stanford, healthcare professionals spoke about the health risk associated with guns, the gun epidemic and trauma care. At the University of California San Francisco, two panels discussed California's firearms laws and recommended ways to talk to patients about firearm access, safety, and risk.
According to Spain, it's difficult for medical professionals to get involved in the gun debate because of the political nature surrounding firearms.
“If this were any other public health problem, we wouldn’t stand for it. But it’s such a hot button political topic that we lose the ability to talk about it," Spain told The Mercury News. “We’ve been a little slow. We’re politically adverse. Our mission is education and research. This is advocacy.”
Medical associations and groups have become involved in the gun control debate. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Physicians and the American Medical Association are just a few who have thrown their hat into the arena.

Guards at your workplace protect you. Home in a gated, guarded area is also safe. The vast majority of citizens does not have that kind of protection. Fortunately, the Constitution guarantees the right of self defense to us, and we will never give that up.
Really, “any other public health problem?” Ok doc, put your money where your mouth is. Are you this passionate and outspoken about heart disease? Car accidents? Cancer? Diabetes? These and many other things cause more injuries and deaths than firearms. So how about it doc, when do you really the troops against lower respiratory illnesses?... Oh, you don’t do all that? Then you’re a liar with a hidden agenda.

re Stanford.....what do we expect from a university that would give Chelseeee a degree after 3 whole yrs of not attending class....
Doctors should stick to healing. They should push hard on adult stem cell research and immunotherapy because these therapies have enormous potential. Doctors have an important job and should focus on it.
My son was a federal police officer. He had to deal with at least two armed mental cases in his area of operation.
There were no doctors around to help!
[PS: My son and his team took down both suspects without shooting them, which they were authorized to do. Just surrounded and tackled them, put on the cuffs and gave them to the locals to hold on federal charges.]
Dr. Winslow should know that, as a flight surgeon with many combat area tours, that sometimes you NEED A GUN AGAINST A LOCAL TALIBAN OR AL QAEDA TERRORIST.

When they collect mine I’d suggest they take caution and not grab it by the barrel. It’s going to be hot, God willing.

I too think we should move society away from semi-auto’s! Install selector switches on ALL FIREARMS! Do it now, for the chilrun!
