Professor Natasha Warikoo claims that white students "reluctantly agree with affirmative action as long as it benefits them
She's displeased that students she interviewed are motivated by "self-interest" instead of social justice
A Harvard University professor claims in a new academic study that merit-based admission processes at elite universities reproduce inequality.
Harvard education professor Natasha Warikoo draws on interviews with 98 white, native-born students at Harvard, Brown University, and the University of Oxford in What Meritocracy Means to its Winners: Admissions, Race, and Inequality, published in the journal Social Sciences.
White students stand in fear of being labeled a racist, but they are quick to call foul should a diversity program appear at all to hamper their own chances for advancement, Warikoo claims in that book.
During interviews Warikoo conducted between 2009 and 2011, these students were asked to sound-off on whether they felt their school had meritocratic admissions and if they supported affirmative action. Many answered the second question affirmatively and hailed the benefits of a diverse student body.
But Warikoo seems concerned with students responses. Analyzing data from these interviews years later, Warikoo points out that students approaches to diversity suggest that theyve internalized the tokenistic rhetoric of the school admissions office, even if they had disagreed with policies like athletic recruitment or legacy admissions before coming to campus.

I wonder what her home looks like... I wonder what her retirement portfolio looks like... I'm sure there's no self interest there.. /s
When I got out of law school I had a chip on my shoulder because I was competing with Ivy League lawyers. (I was also a CPA so I got a good job despite my second class law school).
So, I subscribed to the Harvard Law Review for a couple of years and read it cover to cover, every issue. It was the stupidest, most absurd bunch of blather you could ever imagine. Every article had some new nonsense that only a mentally defective person would believe.
Cured my chip on shoulder.
I think there is a lawsuit against Hahvaard for discrimination in Admissions against meritorious Asians.
What if she's correct? That is, she's in effect confirming the racial characteristics that were discussed in "The Bell Curve."
So, she's saying that Harvard's policy is against nature, but virtuous because it gives her the unnatural effect she wants (undeserved racial preferences).
Couldn't agree more.
Professor Wack-a-doo is busy training the future educators in America but wouldn't survive until morning if she had to improvise in a hostile environment.
This Harvard "professor" should be doing something else.
Her grasp of reality can't possibly be useful to educate (or indoctrinate) mentally and physically healthy future productive adults.
I do think some special consideration should be given to those students who come from poverty and adversity. It should not be granted solely on the basis of race though. A lot of the race based admissions benefit minorities who are upper middle class. They don’t need the help!
IF this idiot professor had lived when Edison was around, she would be complaining that Edison is putting candle makers & kerosene lamp makers out of business.

While ignoring the poor downtrodden immigrant Nikola Tesla who invented AC current and actually drove those folks into a niche business ...
Most of the time when an article starts out “A college professor” you know it is Grade “A” BS.
Of course, they stand in fear of being labeled a racist
If they are labeled a racist their college career is over.
Why, those damn white people! How dare they not just shut up and accept their chances being hampered? The nerve.
It not about her as a member or prospective member of the elite - its about everyone else.
There is indeed.
“Professor Natasha Warikoo claims that white students “reluctantly agree with affirmative action as long as it benefits them “
Additionally, when did affirmative action ever benefit white students?
What about equality of capability?

“Is a Warikoo a type of Toucan?”
Sure looks like it!
Too stupid to be useful
Humans always act from self interest
Of course.
As is the accreditation of mentally healthy competent teachers at ALL levels.
Snowflakes, the insane, 'safe place' defectives and militant Justice Warriors need not apply.
The amount of harm these programs have inflicted on minorities is terrible. Why admit someone to a university who cannot compete with their peers in any major with prospect of gainful employment in the future; and make it much worse by shepherding them into utterly useless majors?
For example, a black student who could excel at many state universities in a high grade major that will almost assure them a good paying job in the future. Instead he goes to a diploma mill like Harvard college (different from Harvard Law and MIT across the river), and gets a degree in racial/ethnic and gender studies, which is worthless and will not get him any job.
This is an example of the “REAL RACISM” of liberals. To deny students the chance for equal opportunity, by denying them an education. Much like their empty promises that women will lead better lives if they murder their babies, which so far has killed some 15.5 MILLION black babies alone, yet has not raised their living standard above poverty.
Face it, Democrats are just as evil today as when they backed slavery.
She's displeased that students she interviewed are motivated by "self-interest" instead of social justice
Why is Professor Natasha Warikoo such a racist?
What happened to "judge not by the color of your skin, but by the content of your character?"
Is Professor Natasha Warikoo a communist?
Our country has been dumbed down. Lifespans are getting shorter instead of longer. What has happened to the lives of the best and brightest who have been pushed aside? The health and safety of our nation has been compromised by professors like Natasha Warikoo. Was she given a place in front of the line, also?
