The irony of it all is that both George Allen and Jim Webb are to the right of most Republicans these days.

Virginia in 2006 was a conservative state. 2008 to now, Obama and the demographics changed VA to a Northern liberal state now because of NOVA.

Had Allen not used that word in ‘06, Allen would have won reelection, he would have won the 2008 GOP nomination and could have beaten Obama instead of McCain.

You are wrong, Virginia was Republican, low crime and English speaking until George W. Bush opened the floodgates.
It was during the 2001-2008 period that Virginia turned into New Jersey south.

You may or may not be right, but I believe that Allen once—at least—apologized for the Virginia that had a poll tax. (The Virginia where the Harry Byrd led Government from 1926 on for the next four plus decades, was the most consistently Conservative in America. And the poll tax was a trivial amount, intended to test the responsibility of the voter, in paying it at the designated time--a protection against the herding of voters to the polls, which we see more and more of.)

Harry Byrd was more consistent than any other Senator--Democrat or Republican in fighting the New Deal, and even as far away as my native Cincinnati was a mentor to me. While I became a Republican in 1964, I could not have advised any Virginian to vote for Allen--if he went out of his way to disrespect Harry Byrd over an issue which was not even current at the time.
