WASHINGTON Setting up an explosive general election battle, a Donald Trump-backed Republican and a Bernie Sanders-endorsed insurgent Democrat who prevailed in an upset will face off in the Florida governor race following primaries Tuesday night, NBC News projects.
In a surprise win, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, a black progressive who never led in a major poll, edged out former Rep. Gwen Graham, the politically moderate daughter of popular former governor and senator Bob Graham, in the Democratic primary. Gillum had 34.2 percent, or 510,450 votes, to Graham's 31.4 percent, or 468,448 votes, with 96 percent of precincts reporting.
For Republicans, Rep. Ron DeSantis easily defeated state Agriculture Secretary Adam Putnam, thanks to a crucial early endorsement from Trump that gave him a major boost. DeSantis captured 56.5 percent, or 908,443 votes, to Putnam's 36.5 percent, or 587,579 votes, with 97 percent of precincts reporting.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the left-wing congressional candidate in New York, hailed the victory.

Congratulations, @AndrewGillum!
The progressive movement is transforming the country - and he proved that again tonight.
Gillum ran on Medicare for All, Legalizing Marijuana, #AbolishICE & more.
Thank you, Florida voters!

As typical, the ongoing polling missed both races for governor by a mile.
On the pubbie side they had Putnam and DeSantis neck and neck, within a point two days before the election. But DeSantis won it by 20+ points.
Gillum wasn’t even polling in the top 3. He was barely in double digits days before the election. And of course he won it.
I have trouble believing this won’t be a walk for the republicans in November. I think Scott will also take the senate seat.
Oh Geeeze, I live in Florida and now we’re gonna have to put up with weeks of ads placed on every station and billboard by Sanders and Soros. Bit it’s not gonna work.
Broward County’s supervisor of elections is under federal investigation for many illegalities.
Expect many more votes for the liberal black guy than Broward has regisrered voters.
This is great news, a Black marxist is a much worse candidate than Graham’s daughter.
Thoughts on FL turnout? Rats are crowing but there were 100K more GOP votes.
Press is working themselves into a frenzy about black Gubernatorial candidates in FL & GA. Problem is not that they are black, it’s that they are left-wing zealots. Election day will be a disaster for Dems in those two states.
why exactly are they crowing?
They say they had “record” turnout.
Every statewide office in GA is held by the GOP. After Nov. election it will still be that way.
who is “they”? what news/article?
Gillum ensures that no blue wave in Florida in November.
It's gonna be a hard sell to push communism here... except to the eternally disgruntled...
Here, some fag tweeted about it

If my calculations are correct there were about 100K more GOP votes in 2014, and about 100K more this year, more total votes (for both parties) means that’s less of a percentage margin this time compared to last time, but still, I’m not inclined to find 100K more votes worrying.
Gillum is under investigation by the FBI, but the Democrats never mentioned this during their primary. He is going to be hammered with this every frigging day.
well that certainly shows what we’ve seen in the special elections the kooks are fired up. We need to be more fired up.
I was unaware that the panhandle was DETROIT Redux.guess it is....

Those numbers don’t look like 1,400,000 like the tweet you linked to stated, more like 979,000
I’m missing numbers from somewhere?
the republican numbers from the article linked in this thread

949,144 <—— total number of votes for republican gubernatorial primary in 2014.
We also raised our turnout this year by over 600K
Only Tallahassee is, because of the universities and battalions of state bureaucrats.
