Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) will name the successor to Sen. John McCain's (R-Ariz.) Senate seat, following news of McCain's death late Saturday afternoon.
Under Arizona state law, Ducey is charged with appointing McCains successor to fill his seat until 2020, when there will be a special election for the right to finish out the final two years of McCains term, Politico reported. There will be an election for a full six-year term in the 2022 election.
The law also states that the appointee must be a member of McCains party.
Ducey has not openly discussed whom he will appoint.
He was a giant. An icon. An American hero. But here at home, we are most proud to call him a fellow Arizonan," Ducey wrote in a statement after the announcement of McCain's death. "Like so many of us, he was not born here, but his spirit, service and fierce independence shaped the state with which he became synonymous.
There has been speculation Ducey would appoint McCains wife, Cindy, to his seat, according to Politico.
The Arizona Republic listed potential appointees on Friday, including Kirk Adams, the governors chief of staff, and a former state lawmaker, Barbara Barrett, the first woman Republican to run for governor in the state.
Ducey, who is running for reelection this year, has said he will not appoint himself to the seat.
Appointing a replacement in a timely manner could have a significant impact on one of the Senates most important upcoming votes: the confirmation of President Trump's Supreme Court pick, Brett Kavanaugh.
After McCains death, Republicans now have a 50-49 majority in the Senate, meaning one GOP defection could sink Kavanaugh's nomination if every Democrat votes no.
A replacement would shift the majority to 51-49, allowing Republicans to lose one GOP vote and have Vice President Pence cast the tie-breaking vote, which would likely go in Kavanaugh's favor.
McCain died after a battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer. His career in the Senate spanned decades, where he became a leading force and a "maverick" of the Republican party.
Well, he was at least a senator.

Imagine if he picked Palin, just to make libtard heads explode.

On local channel 5 here in Phoenix, one of the anchors speculated it could be former Senator Jon Kyl.

Don’t be surprised to read that McCain switched to the Democrat Parry 24 hours before his death.
Alex Jones :o)
Dont be surprised to read that McCain switched to the Democrat Party 24 hours before his death.
PLEASE let McCain’s successor be a true conservative! No more McCains, Flakes, Corkers, etc.
It wouldn’t surprise me if the governor picks himself.
“It wouldnt surprise me if the governor picks himself.”
Every time a governor is in this situation, there is a rumor that he will appoint himself to the senate seat.
I don’t think it has ever happened as it would be political suicide.
Well wouldn’t it be something if McCain’s seat flipped red?
Ping!
I am kind of hoping Kelly Ward, but I suspect it will be someone else. I also hope for JD Hayworth. I dont know if he is still in AZ though.
If Ducey is smart, he would pick Ward, do away with the bickering in this primary.
Senator Kyl is all of 76 y/o.
Will he be a place holder until an upcoming election?
Some of our elders are fully capable of the job at hand
(See our President), but I wondered why chose someone of this generation when the GOP has many other candidates who still want to develop their career.
Besides that, Kyl is in his mid to late 70s. He was also picked by the POTUS to guide the new nominee through the supreme court hearings.
No sweat. Nothing says the replacement can’t have also changed HIS registration moments before appointment, and is the most rock-ribbed libertarian ever to self-identify as a Democrat.
Odds are the he is going to appoint McCain’s wife.
