PETZAEL, West Bank -- An Israeli businessman appears to have bitten off more than he can chew with plans for a crocodile farm in a West Bank settlement. Hundreds of crocodiles have been stranded at the farm in a remote spot in the Jordan Valley -- left behind by a pair of failed business ventures.
The crocodiles were brought to the settlement of Petzael in the mid-1990s as a tourist attraction. Ensuing Israeli-Palestinian violence kept visitors away, prompting the crocodiles' purchase by entrepreneur Gadi Biton, who hoped to sell them for their skin.
But his venture flopped after Israel passed a law in 2012 defining the crocodile as a protected animal, and banning raising the animals for sale as meat or merchandise. Multiple attempts to sell them abroad have failed.
"We found ourselves with hundreds of crocodiles in this farm that no one knows what to do with," said David Elhayani, head of the Jordan Valley Regional Council. A lone worker feeds the animals dead chickens once every eight days.
Dozens of the crocodiles lazed recently on the sun-baked shores of a lagoon on the property, their jaws ajar, revealing menacing teeth.
The animals have become a pain for the owner, the region and Israel. Dozens of crocodiles have escaped on two occasions, including once when 70 flew the coop only to be found after a three-day croc-hunt. The reptiles, which can live well into their 70s, are also reproducing. Their numbers are expected to grow to the thousands in the coming years.

Well, now. The chair is together! And I’m sitting in it. Quite a difference from the dinner chair I was sitting on!
I choose the twos.
You win! I like the threes. Especially three or more. :o]

I already miss the Morning Kitteh, and its just barely Morning!
Lol! Soooo precious—thank you! Gotta send to my diehard SuperHalloweenie friends!
Good Afternoon Kitten is super floofy!
YAY! You’re back! How was your campout? Did the weather cooperate?
Sitting out with Charlie in the wind was not the most comfortable of experiences, and no one else joined us. I don’t know if Sylvia is ill or what. Charlie seemed to think she hadn’t taken Bella out yet, by the time we left to go in. (0945)
I suspect it will be cool and windy tomorrow, as well. My daughter sent me a pic of snow on the ground this morning. Someday, I might get excited about it, but today is not the day!
The campout was nice. It sprinkled a little this morning as we were packing up, so we packed up faster.
I just noticed I lost a nose-piece from my glasses. I’ll have to go by the optometrist in the morning and get it fixed.
I once lost a nose-piece and for about a week, I couldn’t figure out what was wrong. I just bought a new pair, since they were just reading glasses. Now I get my reading glasses at Dollar Tree.
In other news, I may be the proud owner of a couple of parakeets this week. My daughter swears she gave me the gal’s name and phone number, but my question to her, when she asked if I had contacted the owner was, “Why would I refer to her as ‘your friend with the parakeets’ if I had her info?” I guess that’s what happens when you indulge in edibles.
So I told the daughter to let her friend know I would contact her tomorrow. And I reminded her again that I get up at 0200, and go to bed comparatively early. She seems to want to start text conversations at 1630 or later. *sheesh*
“Wat u meen, we iz outta treetz?”
Thank you for additional kitteh! Hope y’all had a grand campout!
Persians always have an expression of deep dissatisfaction. The campout was very nice. We had about 40 people during the day, which included a visit to a train museum, and 30 people spent the night. I woke up occasionally and distracted myself by trying to count up the campers, mentally, but I don’t think I ever got them all.
The 4th load of laundry is on.
Sloshy engaged. Good job! G’nite!
Either that’s a small cat, a big mouse, or a vole. I should have known it was from you! LOL!
Another beautiful pie-eyed kitteh! So pretty!
Did you get all the laundry done? I just got mine sorted, and it looks like I’ll have to find my gloves ASAP as its 55° out and I don’t do cold all that well. Looks like my heavy coat will have to be released from its plastic prison and put into good use.
If I hadn’t been so tired last night, I don’t think I would have gotten as much sleep as I did. I was cold. At one point, I woke up because my right foot and ankle were cold. I hate when that happens!
