Major disconnect: Jobs unfilled despite thousands of unemployed
Dayton Daily News ^ | 08/07/2018 | By Lynn Hulsey

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says 20,000 unemployed people are looking for work in Montgomery, Greene and Miami counties, the three counties that make up the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area.

But some employers look at the slim pickings they get from job fairs and want ads and wonder where all the good workers are.

The disconnect between those looking for work and companies struggling to find workers is one reason so many people in the region are not reaping the full rewards of the booming economy. It’s also a reason companies see their job openings going unfilled.

“What they are saying is, ‘I have the opportunity to win more contracts if I could find more workers,’” said Angelia Erbaugh, president of the Dayton Region Manufacturers Association, representing 400 regional companies. “So, they are in fact turning away work.”

How can companies get the workers they need to help the region prosper and how can more people land the jobs they need to improve their lives? That is the focus of The Path Forward, a Dayton Daily News initiative aimed at finding solutions to the region’s biggest problems.

There is good economic news locally. The June unemployment rate in the three-county Dayton metro area was 5.1 percent, according to non-seasonally adjusted numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s well down from the dreadful numbers posted during the recession years, and some previously discouraged job hunters are once again looking for work.

Yep.

There was some one who was complaining about "so many people can not pass a drug test" but when you pushed for hard numbers it was around 8% that could not pass.

I agree that sometimes basic skills are lacking but complaining that you would have to train them on your company specific software is not really a reason either. Unless you promote from within everyone is going to need training.

I'm a skilled laborer with a community college certificate and five years' experience.

I make a number I won't reveal per hour, call it $n, mandatory 50 hours a week.

I found out over the weekend that one of the companies we supply with parts to make their products is hiring entry-level workers for $n+.50. Don't know about hours or differences in benefits.

But you can bet I'm going to be bringing it up at the team meeting Thursday.

The unemployment rate is near 3% in many areas do you see a correlation?

Plus that was the number who would admit to using it in the month prior. I am sure the real number is much higher if you figure in the ones who would not admit and the ones who smoked it but just not in the prior month.

The MJ use is much higher than 3%. But thats just MJ. Add in all the other goodies and the number of people unemployable because they cannot pass a drug test is quite high.

Then overlap the ones who are illiterate, innumerate, do not have a reliable means of transport, will not take orders, or think they should not start at the bottom , who don’t like shift work/overtime/evenings/heat/humidity/cold or actual physics labor or think welfare is a better deal, and you have run out of employable people and higher pay won’t cure most of those ills.

Hill Billy Elegy is a true story.

Most low end jobs don’t require a whole lot of edumacation.

Unfortunately, we’ve had such a long period of there being such a poor job market that companies are completely not set up for realistic training. We also still have severe penalties for companies wanting to try to get rid of people that don’t work out.

It’s far from solely a wage issue in Dayton. The statement without your modification still fits an unfortunate portion of the local populace - and those aspects are also far from simply being racially aligned.

No mystery? Only mystery is why Fr’ers drag out their favorite old strawman without resding the article.

from the article:

“The irony is there are plenty of jobs to be had. Currently, about 15,500 job openings are posted on the OhioMeansJobs.com website for the 12 counties around Dayton.”

“Nearly half of those posted job openings — 47 percent — pay $50,000 to $79,000, according to a news release from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.”

“But there’s a catch. All of the posted jobs require at least a high school degree or GED, and nearly three-fourths require an associate’s degree or better.”

“The two most common job postings are for heavy load and tractor-trailer truck drivers, a job that requires a Commercial Driver’s License; and registered nurses, which requires a nursing degree.”

and there’s more about lack of entrylevel hsrd and soft skills...?just sayin’

3% use marijuana, 97% do not.
**********
Even assuming that drug use was entirely random, is 330 million the number over 12?

The number is, however, not random. I’d say that in a variety of places that I have worked without random drug testing, that 3% is low for once-a-month user employees.

Further, a heavily-weighted portion of the “3%” is within the 5% “unemployed”.

Many, many, of the employable are already employed.

All of that said, employers have not yet made the adjustment to bringing in untrained people to do complex tasks. They’ve been in an environment where there is a labor supply with a surplus of moderately-to-highly trained competing for lesser positions, for nearly a decade.

There’s also a gross culture of over-certification amongst employers - with legal consequences for having employees without them.

It’s no mystery. Higher wage offers are needed.”””

NOT entirely. Accounting persons will not make good bakers.

Day Labor persons cannot be bank tellers.

The PITIFUL education my taxes pay for is coming home to roost. When a under educated idiot didn’t have a job under Obama, they got Welfare—basically for life—.

Under Trump-—tighter rules & idiots are excused from welfare.

In a company that needs workers-—not cell phone addicts—they don’t have to take these losers.

LIFE IS HARD-—AND IT IS HARDER WHEN YOU ARE STUPID.

I have been self employed since 1980.

I have set my hourly rate at $20 an hour since Jan 1, 1989. Still at that rate.

I didn’t have benefits-—

I didn’t have paid vacations-—

I didn’t have paid holidays-——

I worked or I didn’t get anything paid to me.

One year, I averaged 78 hours a week on billing time.

I was also completely out of town 61 days that year.

I was doing bookkeeping, and I had deadlines I could not change. Nothing was late.

I challenge you to start your own business & keep hiking the wage. You will find out in a hurry that drug tests eliminate a majority of applicants.

You DO NOT wish to do drug tests?

Good luck with YOUR business finding insurance.

It is very obvious that you have never run your own business with your own money.

As a life-long bookkeeper/accounting person, your solutions are not the answer.
