10 Surprising Side Effects To Legalizing Marijuana
Listverse ^ | July 27th, 2018 | Mark Oliver

We’re seeing an experiment in action. Over the past few years, more and more countries and states have been legalizing marijuana, and we’re finally getting to see what effect it really has.

There have been all kinds of predictions. The naysayers have been sure that legalizing pot will all but bring the world to its doom, with drug abuse and crime running rampant. And on the other side, pot advocates have all but suggested that it’ll usher in a new era of peace and prosperity, where mankind finally settles its differences over a toke.

Enough time has passed now, though, that we can pretty definitively say what really happened—and it’s not all what you might expect.

10 Car Crashes Go Up, But Fatalities Go Down

When you legalize weed, it seems, you replace a lot of your drunk drivers with high drivers. And that has some interesting side effects.

First off, legalizing marijuana definitely leads to more people smoking marijuana. In Colorado, adult marijuana use has gone up by 29 percent since it was legalized. But a lot of those people picking up joints are putting down beer bottles, especially before driving.

Drunk driving, in Washington state, has gone down nearly 33 percent since 2007. High driving has gone up about 50 percent—but its hard to get much meaning out of that, because marijuana stays in the bloodstream for weeks after the effects wear off.

“but I do believe that the longer you can keep kids away from it as they hit their teens, the better for everyone”

Pot is proven to damage young minds. Only a fool would argue otherwise.

However, it affects some more than others. There are some who seem to go off the deep end quite quickly. There are others who smoke several times per week for years...then go on to be solid contributors to society.

And nobody knows which they’ll be when they take their first hit.

And, I think we can say the same of alcohol.

Has texting been ruled out as a contributor to fatalities?

Eliminate funding for ICE and the wall, also?

There’s no “Opioid Crisis”. At least where pain prescriptions are concerned.

That is just another narrative created by the Drug War Fascists and the media to make it impossible for pain sufferers to get relief.

People who suffer genuine pain are treated as the worst sort of criminals. That’s immoral.

It proves that government sucks at everything and a good deal of people are too irresponsible to handle anything and need the very same government that sucks, to babysit them. It's a typical vicious cycle.

NJ is pushing Pot hard and the issue is being conflated with misinformation and typical idiot NJ government interjection.

"One thing I have noticed, though, is young black men seem to act considerably more politely and are much less outwardly hostile."

Aaaah… Now your beginning to understand what the dimocrapy party is all about... Sedating their base... Narcotics is the lives blood of their party... ANYTHING that separates them from their supply is a risk to their hold on the poor... Such as a WALL.. Most all those people are poor and homeless because of narcotics, it pulls them down, makes them depended on the one who supplies the fix... In other words, the democratic party...

It'll work for a while.... The English did it in China.. But the Chinese are smarter then your basic street ape, and even seem to be a bit smarter then the gringos. It may take them a little longer before they wise up.... :)

There won’t be one state fifteen yrs from now which has not legalized marijuana, none will resist the millions in extra tax revenue.

Marijuana’s effects have been studied for a long time including a study (of hashish) by the British army of it’s usage in Egypt. Civilians were the subjects of study.

Mr Mariner, just because there is no data to support my statements does not mean that my reasonings are not true. The facts of data collection are many times hidden. Criminals lie and socialism is not honest. While we are on the subject of data it might be reasonably assuming that MJ causes munchies to happen because the comediens are constantly mentioning the concept. Is Mariner a pot head who is a productive citizen?! More power to you!

Lets cut to the chase, I can answer your question right now. Absolutely not! Again, ICE and the wall have zip to do with my comments.

Now answer my question below.

“”So would you agree, the tens of hundreds of billions in tax dollars totally blown on government’s failed war on drugs, all while expanding government in every direction, was a total failure?””

You said expanding government (spending) in every area was a failure.

“People who suffer genuine pain are treated as the worst sort of criminals. That’s immoral.”

Opioids are serious drugs, with the highest potential for abuse.

It is right and proper to pressure doctors to pressure patients toward other therapies. Those other therapies vary widely, from pot to exercise/physical therapy. And the only way to get honest feedback on their efficacy is to first break the addiction.

But, to your point, there are SOME folks who can only function if they have opioids. And that number is far less than the people now addicted. Far less.

And controlled trials have proven that assertion.

When I read your post, I can't tell if the voice in my head should be Joe Friday or Grandpa Simpson.
